I was trying to think of someone, but no. I mean what happened? I guess the big issue is that one of the most fertile regions in the world has slowly been turned by climate change (the natural kind) into near desert. So they have a big population and a culture set up for complex city states and even more complex social strata but no longer the resources to keep it all going. Syria had 4 years of drought and failed harvest with a rising population before the civil war kicked off.
