    It's the symbol of the Sun. Why was a previous globe-spanning civilization leaving solar symbols all over the place, including in hard to reach spots where people wouldn't readily see them, unless they are doing archaeological digs? Did they see the end coming? What did the sun have to do with it?

    Wait...

    It appears there is a 12,000 year solar cycle in which the Earth can get caught up and more or less wiped clean. It appears the cycle ended in 2012 and that the Maya calendar was meant to warn the people that something was coming.

    It's been a symbol - more generally - of forms of energy and life-giving forms, and is at least 12,000 years old, with some of the first examples found in what is now central Eurasia. See Prehistory, here.
