I grew up between Atlanta and Birmingham right in the middle of the MLK civil rights era. We only used "nigra" especially in front of the help. When I was about 5 I asked our maid if she was black all over. The extended family of 4 generations was vacationing in Panama City Beach the day MLK was shot.
