Premise 2: Biological characteristics exist due to evolution selection pressures, except for quirky interactions between genes that yield side effects. Social repression is an emergent property of discrimination, a natural phenomenon. The first such was probably chemical, olefaction in animals, and strigolactone perception in plants; later came visual sensitivity (see In the Blink of an Eye) especially colors.

Conjecture: Campfire smoke and smell of cooking food, were signals, homing beacons for wandering foragers, so learning to appreciate them could be adaptive during the long age of hunter-gatherer human existence.
