The difference is that the system today has a vastly larger amount of power. The majority of people are glued to their smartphones and absorb media all day, every day. In 1914 most people formed their opinions from their real-life experiences, and groups could form and freely associate. Today, freely-associating groups can form on Facebook but they'll be shut down the moment they pose a threat to the system. In fact, with Trump out of the picture, even milquetoast right-wing populism will be purged from online spaces, as already happened to r/The_Donald.

I fear that the level of technology may mean we soon are past the point of no return, and the system will have control forever.
