Just what the fuck is a Palentonga?
An armadillo man that apparently replaced the centaur because the horse man was too fast for his own good. Instead of being fast, the Palentonga rolls around like a Ferrari on a drag race and doing damage, though it only wants to do that to run over some innocent passerby. It also can see invisible people, unlike the centaur. I mean, nagas have supernaturally acute eyesight. As nagas do not exist, it is the end of discussion that they can see invisible. But an armadillo? It has terrible eyesight in real life. But in a video game, there is always some illogical presence. Being the nuclear bomb shelter it is, it can tank almost as many angry mobs as a centaur with its rugged brown scales, giving 3 AC and 7% HP. It is smarter than a centaur, but always lost at a dart shooting contest in a pub.
Ok, but why the Palewhatever Warper?
Actually, I'm going for a 23 streak that requires different races and backgrounds (fuck Chaos Knight). I really tried my best to give each race a background that complements its strengths. Fortunately, a Palentonga has an average aptitude for Translocations. I had already assigned backgrounds to other races, so this guy is just going to take whatever is left. With its Translocations aptitude being on par or better than the other weapon or magic aptitudes, it seems reasonable.
OK, but why Qazlal?
I'm also going for different gods (except Xom, of course. Not sure about Jiyva). I will admit, Palentongas might have strangely shaped bodies, just like their fat horse cousins, giving them less AC on armor, but they are still pretty strong. They are so loud even my deaf grandma can hear them from a mile away (Trolls are the loudest by far, but their invocations is so bad they would not be good candidates for such gods who care). A -3 stealth aptitude is actually the second worst in the game. What does a rather loud species need? An even louder god!
Build
This actually steers the Palentonga closer to the fighter build because of the build's ability to tank many hits, something noise tends to do indirectly by luring such enemies. "But, Warper?", you may ask. Warpers don't have damaging or disabling spells, I say. So, why not just be a fighter? Being a big guy, shields are less of a problem. His close range aptitudes are actually not bad either. Wasting a few points of spellcasting and translocations ain't really a big deal. You may as well put your stat points into strength because you'll be wearing golden dragon armor and some badass weapon and a shield. I prefer the axe because it can cleave and shit. Hydras are no problem with crosstraining or flaming weapons. Am I a fraud? Do you have to follow this guide? No. Am I a top 25 player? Yes: https://crawl.develz.org/tournament/0.25/players/prakerore.html
Am I going for a 23 streak with different races and backgrounds and gods (and excludes the notorious Chaos Knight of Xom, and Jiyva)? Yes. Will you get the orb? Surely but slowly.
P.S. Hi Leo.
