I fear with over-writing that rather than writing because you have something to say, you're saying something because you have to write. That leads to low-quality ideas, imo.

But the other extreme of the pendulum is never writing anything at all because you're too scared it won't be high-quality.

So I guess there's a balance to be found.

Yes, I agree. Sometimes over-writing things I destroy the message I was going for to begin with and can't quite get it back again. Other times though I think the piece is much stronger for it. The fear or writing badly is one I have frequently and for long periods at times. When I write badly I get frustrated and don't keep at it and then the longer I go without writing the worse the writing gets. We writers are nothing if not neurotic :)
