I was wondering this, I presume a head trauma? It looked like he broke his nose more than anything.

That's arterial I reckon... Could be Carotid artery dissection from the force? Smacks his face, vein rips as he's knocked out, bleed finds a way through the damage? Purely speculation mind you.
