Depends, fainting is just the brain losing consciousness from lack of oxygen, which can happen from a row of reasons. It can be sudden, like a perfect chokehold will literally make you faint within 5-10 seconds. Sudden heart-loss can also do it.

But yeah, less severe fainting is usually the result of less drastic health-problem.
