Dumbest thing he did was get involved with them (he could have been a relative of someone involved). The smartest thing he did was resist.
A dude I worked with told me about his family in Mexico knew this food stop chick and was running her mouth saying “fuck the zetas”. Some dudes approached her and ask if they brought ingredients if she would make them soup, she agreed and they brought them. Her sons head was on the top inside the pot and they told her to never run her mouth about the zetas again.
