Is the reasoning that they can’t get close to land? They will be destroyed by middles?

You could always read the linked post to find out the reasoning straight from the horse's mouth 😉 but in a nutshell, yes, if the US carriers get close enough to a peer adversary to actually do anything, they will be destroyed by missiles.

Obviously carriers can still be useful to brutalise non-peer adversaries. The American military is still quite capable of killing goat farmers and half-trained insurgents, and bullying smaller, weaker countries.
