You shouldn't take the quoted number too literally. It's not like ordinary people in the cities can count the number of dead, captured or fled. It probably just feels like "a really huge number", call it a million.

Ukraine's population has been falling since the split of the USSR, in 2022 there was a massive drop and (supposedly) an implausibly rise in 2024 which I don't believe for a second. But even if you include that inexplicable rise since last year, Ukraine's population has fallen by four million since 2021. And that's not including a further five million is the south in the areas liberated/captured by Russia.
