I've been seeing this phrase used a ton lately, specifically in reference to stuff like The People's Joker, or I Saw The TV Glow, because 1) their creators are troons and 2) they apparently "explore trans themes through their art".
But what exactly does that mean? Like people say The Matrix has trans themes because a guy takes a pill and it changes him. But beyond the literal superficial comparison of "drug does something", what are the deeper themes being explored?
Is that the only "theme"? Taking a drug and changing? If so, it's not really a theme at all; it's just like a trope. A cliché.
Everywhere I look I see mediocre ass movies getting all this critical acclaim for their "trans themes". But as far as I can tell that term's just a placeholder for "this is actually really deep and intelligent", the same way people use "queer studies" to mean "cool and interesting topic" when the whole of queer culture is just sex for sex's sake and nothing else.
