Wouldn't expect that to last long, considering they opened up recruitment to women several years ago and that count is still zero.

They do have to match the male physical abilities (lifts, carry, timed marches, etc) though. It’s not like the police, fire brigade etc where they lowered the physical requirements to make them easier than the male requirements.

There's good arguments to be had for having women police officers since part of their job is gonna be dealing with the public, half of which are women. Of course having women on things like SWAT teams it's a lot harder to argue for the lowered admission standards.

Military is similar. I think there's a lot of positions where it is beneficial to have some women amongst the ranks. Especially in the American military these days since it seems more about being foreign police in countries America occupies rather than an actual force for war.

Women served in the military intelligence and specialist reconnaissance units in the British Army in Northern Ireland throughout The Troubles, and were apparently particularly good because they were less likely to stand out. Similarly in Afghanistan they were very good at speaking to the Afghan women who wouldn’t talk to men.

I have nothing against women serving in the Army. My godmother was a decorated police officer during the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya and she received a bravery award for arresting two Mau Mau whilst unarmed so I know women can serve in the police.

I have a problem when preference is given to anyone for immutable characteristics like the RAF was caught doing and had to pay compensation to white male pilots who had been refused promotions solely for being white men.

I think the problems come through where people went too far away from the old idea that "women can't do certain jobs because they are women" over to "there are no differences at all between the sexes".

I say if a woman can manage to pass the same standards as the men, let them do the job. I'd even say there's some room to lower the standards for exceptional women who provide valuable work for any organization. But yes you can't start doing shit like "oh no there aren't enough woman pilots for whatever reason better start hiring women" because honestly there's really no argument to be made as to why you need women fighter pilots, or male fighter pilots for that matter, seems you just make the objective standards for that otherwise the quality of your pilots goes down.

There may be an argument for all women astronaut teams and the like, since women tend to weight less and are smaller, you can argue that it would be more efficient to send say, an exclusively female manned mission to Mars. Though there is some very interesting social experiment data that shows the all female missions are more likely to suffer social breakdowns during the prolonged isolation involved in such missions.
