I've met a couple of people whom I suspected were trans that otherwise seemed normal, in the sense that they weren't acting incredibly weird, weren't trying to be the center of attention, and are otherwise nice enough people to spend time with. Don't really ask about the trans stuff or their gender since it's none of my business and as long as they don't make it my business I'm happy to let them be.

Otherwise normally you'll just notice the crazy attention seeking ones since of course they are the ones doing crazy shit to be noticed and putting up all the internet crap.

Same with gay people really. Plenty are normal and you'd never know unless they tell you. But there's a reason that the stereotypes started and that's because of course, normal people are going to notice the crazy people first. 60 or 70 years ago for example if you ever find out someone is gay it's probably because they were doing something they shouldn't like predating on young boys or behaving inappropriately in public like doing dumb shit in park bathrooms. So that gets associated with homosexuality in the mainstream consciousness.

Queers on the other hand are zero percent normal. Though that's to be expected as their gender is "Look at me, look at me!!"

Anyone who would call themselves a slur is already kinda dumb. Course the yanks would be big on it.

May be shocking for you, but that's how reclaiming the word works.

"Reclaiming" words is retarded, it effectively tells people that they were right all along; you ARE a queer

Only works so far as to not give insults power over you. If I call you a retard, and you laugh it off and make fun of yourself, you kill the insult, but if you serious make it "yeah I am a retard and I'm proud of it" well that's just admitting to how stupid you are.

So queer, word means "strange". People started using it as a slur, whatever, you really want to reclaim a word that means strange? I'm weird and I'm proud of it? Yes you are definitely weird.

Agreed. Which is why the word needs to become a descriptive and not a slur.

I think the difference there is that everyone knew gays existed and they weren't considered "crazy." For example the popular TV show in the 70s "Threes Company" had the premise that the landlord did not allow unmarried mixed sex roommates in his apartments. There were 3 women in this apartment and one moves out. This guy needed a room but the landlord didn't allow it so the guy pretends to be gay and he allows it. Gays certainly were not widely accepted but it wasn't like no one knew what they were.

Fast forward to 1991 and you get silence of the lambs and that seems like the only mainstream portrayal of a transexual that I can think of. They were also shown as sex workers in other contexts but I can't think of a sitcom which tried to portray them as common.

There's enough old people around with extremely negative opinions of homosexuals. Usually I can guess that it's caused due to most of their experience with them being down to unwanted sexual advances when they were young. Which makes sense to me since of course if gay people were not public about it the only way a normal person would ever be clued into someone being gay or not is if they were behaving badly.

Trans people tend to be more visually identifiable, tend to be, some of them are not, the ones that aren't attention seekers usually want to be left alone and do their best not to stand out. But they aren't going to generate much outrage bait on the internet.

I think older people are generally more accepting. It's mainly younger and middle-aged people who are going down the "God hates fags" pipeline.
