Is He “The One”? I Still Don't Know After 4 Years

Q:If I don’t know after four years, does that mean my boyfriend isn’t “the one”? I ask because we’re planning to move in together next summer, and I feel like I should be sure that I want to spend the rest of my life with him. I always hear, “When you know, you know,” so I’m wondering if I don’t know yet, does that mean I never will? I’m 27, and while I’m comfortable being single at this point, I don’t want to figure out three to five years from now that he isn’t my person for life. If you "still don't know" then I'm sorry to tell you this but he is not the one. But you know this already at some level.

Moving in together does nothing to remedy the problem. Sure it's convenient and comfortable but no good relationship is based on convenience. A relationship is about your future together, and that means working together and building something. Together. The lack of a serious commitment means that neither of you will ever be all in.

As long as you are in this placeholder of a relationship you are treading water; you are not moving forward. End it, and get on with your life whatever that turns out to be.
