Much like the Romans, the British just played ball with whoever was living there because they had bigger fish to fry. And again, the Palestinians had a seat at the table and squandered it because they couldn't let go of the fact that Israel was and is a thing. Everything changed after WWI, even the British Empire. The Palestinians are still butthurt that they weren't developed enough as a society/government to actually hold a seat at the table they found themselves at, and they're pining for the day they could have had a territory if they'd just played ball.
