Hitler sought peace with the US and UK at every turn (and the war was never popular among the citizens of these countries). Germany was dragged into the war due to its treaty with Japan, and the ABCD Line amounts to an act of war on the part of the US.

hitler had a peace agreement with Russia, later invaded them. He probably correctly thought they'd break the agreement soon so why not attack first and have he advantage. He also needed oil, a major reason for the entire world war in the first place, Russia had it.

I like playing the board game Risk and I think it is true to life, you need to take a risk. Sometimes send your troops and attack a powerful opponent even if it spreads your troops thin. Hoping by your next turn you can regroup. Having a lot of land is valuable as it gets you more troops. Sometimes don't attack an opponent because you want them to be a buffer between you and another opponent that is more powerful.
