In person, when you want to say something politely, you say it less efficiently. You “make an extra effort,” says linguist Gretchen McCulloch in her book Because Internet, “using hedges, honorifics, or simply more words: ‘Doctor, could I possibly trouble you to open the window?’ versus ‘Open the window!’” Online, you do the same, with different tactics.

This makes sense and seems to line up with how I've observed people speaking, and I'd imagine that it lines up with the past hundred or so years of speaking patterns. Why exactly are you so worked up over the article?

People who speak like that sound silly & to try & normalize it is also silly. No one needs to speka like that or worry about putting exclamation points after everything to make someone else feel ok. It's snowflake stuff & this article attempts to normalize this way of interacting which to me is an issue. Above all I think it's a waste of time & energy.
