I've never been on a date but when I went to bars or clubs I still went through the rituals: Dress nice, smell nice, trim down there (why bother) etc, and when I actually arrive I'd try not to just stand in the corner like a houseplant. I always made an effort and I still would even though there is absolutely no point to it at all.
