A minority of the Qarsherskiyan people living on the Virginia Peninsula have claimed to have sovereignty to land legally owned by Newport News Park and Newport News Waterworks, showing documents proving their ancestors once worked their as slaves on plantations before they were forests, long ago, as well as providing genetic tests showing partial Native American ancestry. The sovereignty of the Qarsherskiyan people over the land is an issue championed by a small but loud minority of Qarsherskiyans. Some even live off the land illegally and have built settlements in the forests, far away from the eyes of park rangers, way off trails.
