Typical employer sponsored 401k retirement accounts will offer you about 30 different mutual funds to invest in. Behind the scenes, these mutual funds are directly supporting the the military-industrial complex.
It doesn't have to be this way. You can get your "free money" 401k matching and self-manage your funds to vote with your wallet at the same time.
- Open an IRA account by transferring a good portion of your 401k account funds into it. Your new IRA account will have the same tax advantages and early withdrawal penalties as your 401k account. More info and recommended brokerages.
- Using your IRA account, purchase socially responsible stocks, ETFs, and/or mutual funds. Or invest in whatever you want.
- Wait for your monthly 401k deposit then transfer your 401k funds into your IRA account. Or transfer quarterly to reduce fees.
- Purchase more socially responsible stuff
- Rebalance periodically and sell if the market is doing poorly
