The Most Annoying Things in Every Core Pokemon Game (Repost)
submitted 6 months ago * by Mcheetah from (self.Pokemon)
The original post is here. Here's what's always annoyed me:
Game Freak implementing vast quality improvements and upgrades in games that should become the standard, only to remove them by the next game because they're lazy and incompetent: Pokemon following you in the overworld, infinite TM use, Contests, the Battle Frontier, Mega Evolution, the Player Search System, day and night cycles, berry growing, Exp. Share being optional and not a game-breaking core mechanic of the new games now, etc.
Trade evolutions. They made more sense back in generations 1 through 3, but from gen 4 onward, they were just needless chores to frustrate and annoy players. Gen 4 should've gotten rid of all trade evolutions.
Almost every Safari Zone and its random catch and spawn mechanics.
Almost every Game Corner; whether it be luck-based slot machines or games even worse than that.
The very poorly designed PC and inventory system in generation 1; Red, Blue, and Yellow. Hard to navigate, hard to organize, and very limited bag space to hold items.
Gen 2's TERRIBLE TM lineup. You got rid of Swords Dance, Body Slam, Double-Edge, Mega Punch, Mega Kick, Seismic Toss, Mimic, Metronome, Skull Bash, Sky Attack, and Tri Attack, for CRAP like DynamicPunch, Roar, Zap Cannon, Rock Smash, Psych Up, Sleep Talk, Defense Curl, and Nightmare?! WTF were you thinking, Game Freak?!
The glitched and broken catch mechanics in generation 2 where every Pokemon escaped the ball after the third shake and you always saw, "Shoot, it was so close too!"
The awful frame rate of battle animations in generation 2. Gen 2 has the worst battle and attack animations of any Pokemon game ever. Even gen 1 looked nicer.
Gen 3's terrible TM lineup. Although they aren't as bad and useless as gen 2's.
Gen 3 having no day/night cycle, especially for the gen 1 remake, FireRed.
GameFreak never remaking Pokemon Blue for some stupid reason, even though we got FireRed.
Trying to catch or evolve certain Pokemon, like Feebas.
Navigating Sinnoh in Diamond and Pearl and all of its backtracking and extreme over-reliance on HMs. Rock Climb is probably the dumbest and worst HM they've ever made, although Defog is a pretty close second.
Game Freak replacing the female protagonist from Crystal version, Kris, with a much worse, way more annoying new girl in the remakes.
Trying to retcon the ugly name "Ethan" onto Gold, ten years after the fact. No; he's always going to be "Gold." You're not going to have the main characters names go: Red, Blue, Leaf, ETHAN, Kris, Silver. No, screw that ugly "overweight plumber" name for Gold.
The convoluted and dumbed-down PC system in HeartGold/SoulSilver that made using it unnecessarily hard.
Not fixing the weak level curve of wild Johto Pokemon in the GSC remakes. Also, not giving us any good areas to grind in (Mt. Silver caps at level 50, and even those strong Rapidash are rare.)
Ruining the SS Aqua as a grinding/money gaining location by making it a one-time ride. In the original games, you could ride it over and over again and use it to grind. Same thing applies to the Sunday TM giveaway in Goldenrod City's department store; you can now only get Return/Frustration once, when it used to be given away every Sunday.
The HG/SS remake music being a huge downgrade over the original GBC GSC music.
Changing the locations/availability of Pokemon in the remakes as well as keep them at the same low-levels they were before.
Locking valuable TMs behind those stupid and infuriating Voltorb Flip games. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they replaced the Game Corner slot machines with something a thousand times worse, and unlike in the original games, you couldn't just buy coins and skip the stupid game entirely like most people do. Major TMs in HG/SS could only be gotten through this HORRENDOUSLY AWFUL Voltorb Flip garbage; making it a thousand times worse than the original slot machines.
Not introducing unlimited TM use here, and instead doing it in gen 5. (Kind of a nitpick, but considering HG/SS were the best Pokemon games Game Freak ever made, it's a major letdown to still be restricted to only one TM per game.)
Getting rid of the Battle Frontier in gen 5. Getting rid of the Battle Frontier, and replacing with (something worse than) nothing, is possibly one of the worst decisions Game Freak has ever made. This is when Pokemon went downhill and never peaked again.
Getting rid of following Pokemon in the overworld.
Not having a Safari Zone in a region, Unova, that really NEEDED one. Most of the missing Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh Pokemon from gen 5 could've just been caught in a Safari Zone located in Anville Town, but noooo...! That would've made too much sense!
That stupid and pointless C-gear crap in Black/White/B2/W2 and the game trying to make you use it EVERY TIME you turned it on.
Locking a difficulty system behind an extremely convoluted and stupid Key System that required beating Pokemon Black 2 then trading the difficulty to another game (and Hard Mode was ONLY in Black 2; White 2 had a pointless and dumb Easy Mode.) This should have just been a choice in the options menu. This is probably the worst technical decision Game Freak has ever made; all that trouble for something that just should've been in the Options menu from the very start.
The gen 6 titles; X and Y. They are SO STUPID! Especially since they were named after the three spatial dimensions as "the first 3D RPG Pokemon games (but not really.)" But they never made a Pokemon Z, making their names even more stupid! And to add to the stupidity, they already made a "Pokemon XD" game on the GameCube, making "Pokemon X" an even worse title.
Gen 6 being stupidly easy and there being no way to make the game more challenging (besides self-imposed stupid challenges, like Nuzlockes.)
Gen 6 ruining Hoenn, especially Mauville City.
No Battle Frontier in the Hoenn remakes; the region it debuted in. Which makes the remakes literally pointless for anyone who's played the original games, with absolutely NO replay value to them and nothing to do whatsoever after the post-game or "Delta Episode." Pokemon save files have almost no replay value whatsoever without a Battle Frontier or something to use your strong Pokemon in. (And no, the Battle Subway or Pokemon Battle Royal don't count; they're trash.)
The ANNOYING RotomDex in Sun/Moon/US/UM. (ALL I WANT TO DO IS CHECK THE MAP! SHUT TF UP! STOP TELLING ME POINTLESS ADVICE AND GAME TIPS AND BS I DIDN'T ASK FOR! LET ME CHECK THE DAMN MAP ALREADY!) RotomDex is probably the most annoying thing in any Pokemon game ever. I despise how annoying it is! And worse of all; Alola doesn't even have a proper Pokedex; they scrapped the National Dex in gen 7, so a Pokedex is completely pointless in these games.
The Player Search System being taken out and removed for that horrendous, convoluted, broken, stupid, and annoying Festival Plaza; possibly the worst trading port Game Freak has ever made.
Annoying, long, unskippable cutscenes. Especially if you have something in real life you need to take care of and the game won't let you just save because they throw ten-minute long pointless, unskippable cutscenes in your face.
Everything Game Freak has ever done after Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. None of that crap on the Switch is canon whatsoever. And Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are nothing more than fan-made mods on the Unity engine, not official Pokemon games from The Pokemon Company. I refuse to believe otherwise; there WERE NEVER any gen 4 remakes released, and Pokemon's last official games were US and UM.
