Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya make a cute couple. It's good that the movie makes them central characters. It will draw their fans. I read that the third book, The Messiah is dark. Villenueve should be careful about following the book too closely. People might not want to see Paul become a villain. If he is the villain, who is the hero? If there is no hero, the movie would be saying that all leaders are villains. Would people want to see that?

True, they do at that. And they're doing a great job in the movie for my money. Messiah is actually the 2nd book and I like where it goes. There's no real heroes in the Dune Saga. It's a wonderfully complex universe and even Leto II, who manages to change everything on Dune (e.g. turn it from desert to lush, green planet among other things) has to do it at the cost of his own humanity. That being said, and while I'd love to see all four main books (and possibly the 5th, Chapterhouse) become movies, I don't think people would like them as much as the first book. Don't get me started on the books his son and another dude wrote. I thought they were fun, but they're very divisive among fans.

If Messiah is dark, I don't think it should be made. Let people remember Dune as Paul being a hero and his romance with Chani. Don't break people hearts. There is enough sadness in the world. Let people see a movie and be happy for a few hours.

I get what you're saying, but the world Herbert created is on par with LOTR. It's an amazing look at humanities potential, tens of thousands of years into the future. I couldn't put those books down and I'm usually pretty cynical about adaptations, but Villeneuve did an amazing job. I'd love to see God Emperor of Dune made into a movie. The Leto II sandworm/human hybrid alone would be worth a ticket.
