Ignorance does not have much to do with it, nor intelligence. It is a long term psychological game that is played over and over again.

Anger is first, which comes from bad experiences in life. Anger is a natural and temporary respond. They may be related to certain bad persons.

If people are traumatized in many ways, they can hold on to anger for a long time. Anger then becomes hate. Hate against these bad persons. And fear against people similar to them.

If people are hating certain persons, they are often telling others about it. This repeats and gets emphasized, like rumours. People support each other, also in hate.

A small thing can become something huge. Especially if there is a lot of fear involved. Fear that is often emphasized by the media. Now certain people start to think that they need to act against certain other people to protect themselves.

If you have a strong position, it is easy to protect yourself. Just avoid certain people. And you start to protect your life.

But those who are weak may put on masks, and they try to smash people that they don't like. For any reason that they think is OK. Including journalists, children or old people.

And those who are crazy cause violence with the other group and manipulate the media to blame it on them. The media can be a great amplifier and push a certain narrative and agenda.

Am I talking about Israel? Or Saudi Arabia? Or about the Antifa? Or about WW2 Nazis in Germany? Or maybe S.Africa? Or the KKK? Or Cambodia? Or street gangs? Or ISIS? Or even the CIA?

So much hate in the world.
