It depends. You're not allowed to drink or smoke until you're 21, even though you are socially considered an adult at 18. My best guess is that it is due to health issues. I can't find any studies on this topic.

Thats because a shitty special intrest group called mothers against drunk driving, which was essentially just a ton of prohibitionist karens, demanded the age be raised to 21 in the us.

In the rest of the world, its 18 or maybe 19/20 in some more repressive countries like canada.

Not sure. It may of been slightly based in fact at the time, although it clearly has not made a huge impact of society and has had more negative externalities by driving underage stuff underground and making it more irresponsible.

That, and it has been a massive blow to liberty.
