The person in that pic is right though. At 18, the brain isn't done developing yet. And nobody would really consider an 18 year old an actual adult. I'd agree with you though, OP. If people want to go on HRT and have surgery at 18, I wouldn't mind if they could, so long as they pay for it themselves and don't steal from taxpayers.

Well, the vast majority of western society considers 18 the adult age.

Just because they consider it "adults" doesn't mean they're right. They only did that because they opened a can of worms by allowing 18 year old teens to vote. Other European countries are now opening another can of worms by lowering it to 16 by voting, and you know what happens next, not only 18-19 year olds are now "adults", now 16, 17, 18 and 19 year olds are now "adults".

My nephew is nine and loves to wear skirts and makeup, probably copying his older sister I suppose. What I like about the situation, the only thing, is that his parents and all of us are neutral, chill, and not giving him advice. He doesn't wear skirts or makeup to school. I'm hoping sometime soon he will catch a flash of a little girl's leg and his life will change but I am admittedly biased.

That is the right approach, don't push them into it and be a troomer, but also don't discourage children exploring gender in a way that does not involve you shoving pills down their throat or bringing out the snippers the second you catch wind of it happening.

His parents are so cool. They both told me, well, if he's gay, we'll be supportive. There is so much trans stuff in the media, it is no wonder if he is a bit confused. Glad you approve. Really.

What I don't like about the trans movement is that it attempts to tell kids things about themselves that they don't even know. This kid could be trans, or he could be a feminine guy, or copying his sister, but no one but the kid will know that. I think it's wrong to go in and tell the kid what to make of himself when really that's for him to work out.

The "egg" culture is really toxic, because basically every person who questions their gender according to them is trans. I 200% support trans rights, but it should be the person's decision to transition. Ppl can be trans, but also non binary, gender non conforming, a feminine boy, a masculine girl,... Trans culture is more and more popular online, and it's possible some very young ppl might want to alter their body at 13 but will completely change their minds 4 years after. I think a bit of gatekeeping is necessary here, I mean, just look at Sweden, there has been an explosion of gender dysphoria cases recently

I agree. I support their rights to transition but I think more support needs to be given to children. It's a massive red flag when people (on the internet) try to tell you things about yourself you don't even know. Same goes for some of the sexual orientation subreddits. If you don't know your sexuality or whether or not you are transgender, no one else can tell you that you have to work that out yourself (except a good psych who can work with you to help you work things out). It just reeks of a lack of boundaries and controlling behavior to me.

Have you seen the egg irl subreddit ? Dangerous af place for impressionable teenagers imo. Lots of ppl confusing depression with gender dysphoria.

Yeah that subreddit is creepy and manipulative. It takes fairly common experiences of people with low self-esteem and labels them trans. Smells a bit like grooming to me too.

The adult age worldwide should be changed to at least 20 tbh. 25 would be ideal though since that is indeed when your brain fully develops.

PS: This is coming from a group of three 18-year-olds. We are physically and mentally teenagers and will not consider ourselves young adults until we turn 20. We will not even vote until then. We are not adults.

I disagree, but okay.

We got the draft by saying 19 year olds are not adults, just saying.

What draft?

Kenzen is right, it really should be 20

[–]OffAndSphere 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

It depends. You're not allowed to drink or smoke until you're 21, even though you are socially considered an adult at 18. My best guess is that it is due to health issues. I can't find any studies on this topic.

Thats because a shitty special intrest group called mothers against drunk driving, which was essentially just a ton of prohibitionist karens, demanded the age be raised to 21 in the us.

In the rest of the world, its 18 or maybe 19/20 in some more repressive countries like canada.

[–]OffAndSphere 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

lemme guess with really shady research

[–]Tortoise[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not sure. It may of been slightly based in fact at the time, although it clearly has not made a huge impact of society and has had more negative externalities by driving underage stuff underground and making it more irresponsible.

That, and it has been a massive blow to liberty.

I've read somewhere that the brain isn't fully developed before you turn 25. I think that if 18 yo want to go on HRT and transition, they should be allowed to, but I'm 25 and tbh my way of seeing the world and myself has drastically changed in comparison to when I was 18.

[–]Tortoise[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't deny that.

It just comes down to the fact adults should have adult rights.
