“Even when presented with a wealth of options and opportunities, people will still default to making what’s comfortable and familiar: themselves,” said Kotaku AU reporter Ash Parrish. “Shouldn’t that mean, then, when game makers implement these character-creation engines they should add options that reflect all of what humanity has to offer, rather than just a narrow band of it?”

The big problem with this logic, Ass Parrish, is that you, (as Kotaku garbage always obligated to do), pulled your assumption out of your ass. For all we know the majority of players could be black women making a stereotypical Nordic Aryan man character for escapism purposes. Larian Studios analytics could report what characters are being made but physically can not report who makes these characters.

I'm female but when I am playing a MMO and want to be left alone I play a white male. I tried playing other races but turns out people are super racist. I tried playing females, get sexually harassed and stalked. Weirdly, the best way to get left alone is playing a giant blond beefy fighter in pink armor. People assume I'm a gay man and might hit on them or that I'm a teenage boy trolling, neither of which people want to interact with.

This sort of shit is always a bit funny. Larian JOKINGLY stated in their community post that they were disappointed, the article's clickbait title implies they were being serious, even though the article does say it was tongue in cheek.

It should never be a surprise or problem that the stats show the majority of players chose a white male character. The majority of video game buyers are white men. They should stop trying to poison the well that pays their salaries.

However, on a different day, I imagine such people would tell you that it's important to have character creation options so that people can make avatars that look like their real bodies, and that to make a character that looks any different is "appropriation".

I suppose the way the devs can win this game is to make their product disproportionately unpalateable to those fitting in the more popular pigeonholes.

The devs never said anything about race or sex, to my knowledge. They were just disappointed that an amalgamation of the most commonly selected character features turned out to be incredibly bland, as though that wasn't to be expected.

They were disappointed that there were no distinctive features on the composite character, as if most people are going to select the same highlighting feature.
