The ones who live storybook lives from the very beginning. The kids who are “raised right”. The kids who never bullied you or anyone else, but always stayed on the straight and narrow. They got their high school diploma, their college degree, and managed to settle down in their mid-20’s with a wife and two kids in a suburban neighborhood.
They say hello to their neighbors everyday as they wake up early to fetch the morning paper, and drink a coffee from their fancy Keurig coffeemaker in the kitchen of their 6 bedroom home with a 4 car-garage.
Do you feel any type of way towards them? Envy? Hatred? Indifference? I personally can’t decide how I feel about them. They don’t even know I exist, other than knowing the vague concept of there being “losers” out there who didn’t make it. Everything just fell into place naturally for them, so they aren’t really sure how someone’s life wouldn’t contain a wife, kids, and a loving family. We are like aliens to them.
I can’t deny that sometimes I crack a smile when I see a happy family on TV interacting with each other, and glean some kind of satisfaction from seeing a life “done right”. I don’t know if it’s my monkey brain going “ooh ahh eek!” when I see another human family having a good time, but I do get the warm fuzzies inside when I see a traditional Hollywood depiction of a strong family unit.
