I looked into it more after I posted. It's hella exciting!
Craigslist, Kijiji, Freecycle, etc. might be okay to a point. An app might be better, but the laws might stomp you. Direct friends and friends of friends would be best. I'd love for people to trade more, or gift within communities. There's a reason why they tyrants are trying to destroy society with social distancing as well as all the social engineering of the last century weakening us into powerless individuals.
They mentioned his rain water collection barrel in the corner but they didn't even point to the rotating barrel composter beside it. I'd love a set up like that, or hydroponics, or best: aquaponics.

Now back to notes on the OP video:
For a kit: $2,900, in 2017, coming down over time (up to 9x more cost effective with the larger 2019 garden versions in the short video above). Does not include water or electricity or wifi. Save $1000 by building your own parts (it helps to have a 3D printer). Almost everything is off the shelf. Open source and completely customizable. The software will only get better. Be independent off grid with a water source (rain barrel, tank, pond, river, etc) and only needs the 2 solar panels ($100 each? or $50 each? and/or with the batteries?). The 4x8 garden should easily provide enough vegetables for one person all year. Getting all your calories is another story. They're working on a bigger tougher 8x16 version to feed a family of 4.

This video is old as fuck. But I guess the pace of technology really has hit a wall recently. I am glad that this guy put the work in to actually build this but I would like to see people inventing something more marketable. For example a hydroponics system that can monitor water quality, nutrients, and add nutrients and balance the ph. That would be implementable today, with current technology, and it would be very effective.
There already are hydroponic systems you can buy that are just too expensive and still require regular maintenance to add water and nutrients.
What would be even better is to have an app that would allow you to sell or trade your fruits and vegetables locally. It is impossible to grow exactly what you want and how much; so you usually end up just giving it away to anyone who will accept it when it is in season and still have to buy other things that you haven't grown or don't have enough of.
