I knew a guy in the Army that was stationed there for a few years. He hated it. Once you had seen everything there was nowhere to go and nothing to do and you can't just get on the Interstate and drive to another state.

Sounds like a form of 'island fever'. There's quite a bit that people enjoy doing there, but it's probably not great for people who feel compelled to travel.
It's also a lot more expensive, and forget about next day delivery from the mainland. But a lot of people can tolerate the beaches there, and poking lava with a stick probably wouldn't get old for quite a while.
