Cold weather can do a number on coal if it isn’t properly treated.

In 1983, the Deep South of the US had 136 hours of sub freezing weather. Temperatures as low as 5F. Arkansas Power and Light didn’t treat their coal piles with an anti freeze material. There were news clips showing front end loaders bouncing off the frozen coal piles as they tried to scoop it up.

AP&L couldn’t keep up with demand. AP &L tried to blame the gas company, Arkla, for rationing gas supplies. Blaming Arlka didn’t work after folks saw those news clips.
