This is total speculation though. Maybe Emma is the normal one and Ellen was just a very needy/emotionally unstable spouse. Some people are like emotional vacuums, always demanding emotional support and never giving. It's completely possible that Emma just doesn't like cameras so doesn't photograph well, and got sick of being with mentally ill wife.
