Why Georgia Is Called The Goober State

I read this article three times and I still don't know the origin of this nickname. I mean, I get the 'why' (a shit-ton of peanut production - yeah, GA Farmers!) but I thought it would explain the origin. Now I have to go look this up!

This snowplow column is so revealing. Is that really how urban media liberals see the rest of America: as a place full of people as bitter and as judgmental as themselves? This is what happens when people who have extraordinary power to shape the media discourse live in a political monoculture.

Mom's best advice to me growing up was to 'kill 'em with kindness'. She would explain that most people find it really difficult to be mean/rude/condescending to you if you are sincerely nice to them. Many decades later, and it still holds true.

Back in 2008, when Obama became president, one of our black neighbors started acting rude toward us. They even went so far as to put up a tall fence between our properties.

We had already been neighbors for over 5 years prior to this, and on very friendly terms. We were quite surprised at this change in attitude, and really couldn't figure out why. The only thing that had changed was the president. We were not deterred, and keeping mama's advice in mind, we continued to chip away and be the nice neighbors we have always been. We would bring them fresh food when it came our way and share items from our garden. They begrudgingly started to come around.

Twelve years later and we are still neighbors, and now are back to being just as friendly as ever. In fact, probably more so in the last year or two. We even split costs on some tree removal to our mutual benefit. To this date, we really are not sure what caused the rift, but our continued, relentless kindness healed that rift, and we are good friends now.

One fall-out from this will be that people will chose to drive themselves instead of flying or using public transportation, resulting in a rise of vehicle pollution.

No. We will be on federal lands in later March and this will not be required of us.

This is especially true with recipes. Everyone wants to preface the recipe with a history, cultural education, or meaningful personal blather. Just get to it already.

We just returned home from camping. It was peaceful. Started chilly, but warmed up by the last day. We're now back in the city - in the South US. Which pretty much means it's been gunfire and fireworks all day, peaking to insanity in about 90 mins.

Tomorrow will be the traditional New Years good luck dinner of pork and hoppin john. I'll eat a lot, just to be safe.

Demonstrations by Swedish Moslems turned mostly peaceful and included chants in Arabic about killing Jews. In the rioting, several cars were set ablaze and at least 10 people were arrested.

"The chants reference a massacre of the Jews in the town of Khaybar, in northwestern Arabia, in 628 C.E." Wow, and I thought the folks who got their undies in a bunch over Confederate Statues were hung up on the past...

Yep, or in the alternative, learn a trade instead and avoid the life crushing loans altogether.

They Know How to Prevent Megafires. Why Won’t Anybody Listen?
wahala 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun 3 years ago

Very compelling article. Thank you for sharing it. This statement hits the crux of the issue:

"She’d (Lenya Quinn-Davidson) like to get Californians back closer to the fire culture in the Southeast where, she said, “Your average person goes out back with Grandpa, and they burn 10 acres on the back 40 you know, on a Sunday.” Fire is not just for professionals, not just for government employees and their contractors. Intentional fire, as she sees it, is “a tool and anyone who’s managing land is going to have prescribed fire in their toolbox.”

Californians seems to be completely unable to do anything for themselves and rely on their nanny gov't to care for all aspects of their adult-lives. We don't have mega-fires in the SE for this exact reason. Our culture is ok with prescribed burns and we don't lean on our gov'ts only to do them for us.

Let California burn. They can always rebuild.

I was surprised by how low the surge turned out to be. NHC was warning it could be 30-40 miles.

I'm the sous-chef in the house so I'm not the best person to ask. We do southern-ize our tamales and use pulled pork that we smoke for the meat. We get a ton of meals out of all that (the pulled pork, then the tamales). We keep the tamales really simple: masa, pork, pepper sauce and steam in a husk. We serve with more pepper sauce, a little queso, salsa, and sour cream.

Our food trucks leave a lot to be desired...I did see one that specialized in British food down by the boat ramp a couple weeks back and it left me wondering who would eat that fare and why there.

Sorry for completely derailing this topic.

Actually, that was Doc. 143, so this: https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.447706/gov.uscourts.nysd.447706.143.0_2.pdf

And the redactions can be lifted in this too. No good.
