Look to Japan, which developed elaborate systems of manners and mores to deal with the challenges of lots of people living together on islands of limited space.

You can find examples of communally oriented societies where people have few problems seeing the benefits of forms of collectivism. Communities that foster the needs of the group rather than fetishize the desires of the individual are not rare in human history, no subjugation necessary.
