My mom has them in her yard. That was always a good early sign that the dreaded winter was finally over.

After reading about it, I think your identification is correct! When I shared this photo I thought it was kind of sad I couldn't even tell you all what the name of this plant was, so I only called it "shrubs." But now you have identified it for me, so thank you for that!
