When people hear segregation based on sex, they think of the racist laws that excluded black people from white only spaces. They claim it's not okay to separate men and women, as much as it was not okay to separate black and white people. Why is racial segregation discriminatory, while sex segregation is a requirement and not discriminatory?
Another thing I hear often is "if men should not be allowed in women's spaces because they might be attracted to women, and stare at a woman inappropriately making women uncomfortable, why should lesbians be allowed in women's spaces"?
I have no response to that question honestly. As a lesbian, I have stared at women sexually and dreamt of doing sexual things with them, especially in bathrooms and locker rooms.
If we feel uncomfortable by men staring at us sexually in these spaces, why should I and other lesbians be allowed in women's spaces? Wouldn't other women feel just as uncomfortable knowing I stare at them sexually and dream of sleeping with them? I have not acted on these desires without "permission". I have never raped another woman. But how is that different from a man not acting on his own "desires" when he sees women in locker rooms, bathrooms, etc?
