Hypothesis for discussion, what if... the classic employment relationship was abandoned in favor of a universal independent contractor paradigm?
Starting from some knowledge of business management, of which there is a plethora of sources, I've turned to favor the idea that to "actualize" or optimize one'self, it behooves one to adopt business principles for managing one's own life. IOW operate your personal life like a well-managed business. This philosophy can be followed with or without employment in the picture, but it is a guidance regards this hypothesis.
For a recent background example, we have that California legislators decided to deny independent contractor status for drivers who volunteered to provide car rides mediated by Uber, and Lyft. Yes, they did, and upon doing the numbers, the outlook was so dismal, both companies decided to terminate operations in CA. That (would have) cut off income for the drivers and rides for their customers. All it would have done (if carried out as planned) would have reinforced the hubris of the legislators (value to economy equals zero), and setup conditions for growth of taxi companies (time lags and quality of service doubtful).
So for starters, the concept of elimination of employees, to whom an employer usually must provide benefits like insurance, pension, termination rules, etc. is bound to be attractive. Such benefits might be outsourced to startups to provide to independents who don't want to DIY.
Companies would trade a role as distributor of jobs collectively, into a role of centralized demand for services, which may be provided by contractors independently (distributed by chance). So some centralization remains, but contractors would have more freedom to spread their services across a diversity of labor-demand sources, while companies would have a more tenuous relationship with their labor organization. I believe this decentralization could lead to more opportunities, more economic complexity (sophistication) and flexibility (freedom).
Hierarchies would remain, but competition would be clarified, with rules specified by contract.
