[–]wokuspokus 12 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 0 fun13 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, for two reasons. Firstly, some people have a genital preference and I don’t think that’s transphobic. Non-disclosure can end up with the other party saying no (and this is an awkward and unpleasant experience for both parties). At the end of the day, if you end up *doing the deed, they’re going to know, so surely it’s best to disclose and have a respectful conversation first.

Secondly, and I think this is more important, SAFETY. Particularly if men are involved. Women don’t want to have to check behind regularly, or avoid going out alone after dark. We’d rather not, but we do it for our safety. Surely disclosure of trans status prior to having sex with someone goes along the same lines.

Is it a form of rape/sexual assault? I’d say it’s a form of sexual assault, as the other party isn’t able to make a fully informed decision (this applies to intercourse only).

Comparable to religion, race etc. Tbh I’m not sure. Think this is highly context dependent. I wouldn’t have sex with someone before I knew them properly. So, I’d be aware if you had fundamentalist religious views by then anyway. (For me, believing strongly in queer theory is a dealbreaker- our core beliefs are in direct competition). I imagine if you do one night stands, what people believe may not be important, so in this context it’s not the same. As for online dating- I don’t really know about it, but I’d say probably disclose before you meet?

They’re both rooted in female oppression historically. The reason most sports and most high status jobs are ‘masculine’ and home, beauty and lower status jobs are feminine is rooted in women not being allowed to do sport and being home makers (because we weren’t allowed an education or could be fired for being pregnant so no good jobs either).

They are stereotypes no matter who does it. The only way to break those stereotypes is to be comfortable doing what you like, regardless of whether it’s ‘womanly’.

I like sports, metal and beer. I just enjoy those things. To me these things aren’t inherently masculine, they’re just things. Sport is fun, I like the way metal sounds and beer tastes nice. Doesn’t make me a bloke. I don’t agree with the ways society focuses on women’s appearance just because they were born female. Doesn’t make me a dude. I also like flowers. That doesn’t make me a woman. In short, I believe stereotypes are bulls—t and that I am a woman because I was born with the body type due to which my female ancestors were denied the vote and most other rights, and my sisters in other countries still have reduced rights. Sex selective abortion, menstrual huts and rape don’t happen because of stereotypes and you can’t ID out of oppression.

That’s interesting. I am mildly autistic and a tomboy. I’ve always been a tomboy (I could hardly be less feminine if I tried XD). If I was 5-10 years younger I think I’d have been pushed into transition or thought about transition. I doubt I ever would have, as I’ve a good relationship with my parents, who are right-leaning (I’m quite left wing) and I think they’d have told me in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS I was being told a pack of lies. As it is, I’ve always been really confident in myself, so I wouldn’t dream of IDing as male or changing my body.

I know lots more transwomen then transmen and they’re much louder. I honestly think the ‘raised as a man’ argument has merit, from my own experience. I also think they’ve not considered the impact on women, which relates to the socialisation argument- girls are conditioned to be kind and considerate far more than boys. Most of the transmen I know are really introverted and usually have mild Aspbergers. From the social circles of a few of my closer friends, there is some social contagion, but this seems to apply more to IDing as trans/NB and less to medical transition (or even starting hormones).

That’s awful and raises an interesting point. WHY is Biden (who appears to be interested in trans rights) not doing anything about housing and medical care (genuine human rights issues) but doing everything he can to erase women’s rights in your name?

I’m really sorry about what happened to you. My honest opinion is a third space should be present where practical. It is the only solution. The issue with going with gender identity is with toilets self ID is basically used. This means women can’t complain about a man (not transwoman, a literal creepy man) in their facilities, as he can claim to be a transwoman. There is evidence to show neutral toilets are more dangerous for women so they cannot come at the expense of a woman’s only space.

As for sport, women cannot compete with transwomen. A third facility for changing should be provided, but transwomen (retaining advantages due to male puberty, and having much higher T levels than women) and transmen (who, in terms of sports, are equivalent to women doping T) need to compete with men. Women’s sport is not a fall back for transwomen (who, in terms of sports, are effectively men taking drugs to make themselves a little bit weaker). I know a lot of transpeople due to being a student in LGBT+ society. The MtFs are much stronger than any woman I know, and most of these transwomen are not sporty (I do lots of strength work, and they could obliterate me) and the transmen get really strong, really quick. There are mixed sports, which right now are great for transgender people and I really think they should be encouraged to play these. Recreational clubs often mix. Racquet sports (mixed doubles, and tend to mix recreationally) and running (smallest gap between men and women, and often very casual) clubs are great examples.

What legal rights do they not have?

1) Just use the lav matching your sex. True oppression regarding this is not having a female facility, which some places are reverting to (male & neutral)

2) Not a legal right, also applies to women, disabled people.

3)Not a legal right- you can’t control peoples speech. Although it is very rude.

4)They literally can.

5)This has nothing to do with legal rights. Sexual attraction has the word SEX in it for a reason. Not disclosing trans status is coercive rape.

6) If you have medical issues, they should be treated in accordance with your sex. Not legal rights related.

7) How can wanting to take hormones and take risky surgery/ cut off healthy body parts not be a mental health issue? Tbh I think the stigma around MH generally is probably a bigger issue than this classification. It’s okay not to be okay. Not a legal rights issue.

8) Anyone with any ‘issues’ post trauma has this. Nothing to do with legal rights.

9)You get placed with your SEX. To put men in with women, regardless of how they identify, puts women at risk. Not to mention how easy it is for men (not trans) to claim they are trans and have women at their mercy. And it’s happening, check out #thisneverhappens. This is nothing to do with trans people either, it’s just men taking advantage. Your feelings do not supersede women’s rights. How dare you even suggest this!

10) This has nothing to do with legal rights.

11) Women, black people etc.

12)Fairly sure this isn’t true. Having to clarify trans status isn’t infringing on your human rights.

So, I ask again, what RIGHTS do trans people not have?

This absolutely. Most non- LGBT TRAs I know are women who have fallen for the emotional side of it. I think there’s a fair few GC people (particularly the younger GC peeps here) who either supported QT or just didn’t engage with either side because surely TWAW/TMAM and all that goes with it is just being kind. Then you peak- you see something that cannot be ignored (sports, the VRR incident, e.g) and you don’t care about being kind because the other side have zero interest about being kind to women. Then you start thinking logically, and then the QT you’ve built in your head crumbles.

This is why sex should not be changed on official documents, so transgender people can get the most appropriate treatment, almost always aligning with their sex. There may be a few instances (with medicines that interact with sec hormones) where the best treatment would be in line with their ‘gender identity’ or even something different again. If it’s all disclosed, medical professionals have the best chance to give the best treatment.

I meant in regards to professional sports. It doesn’t really matter if he competed in the 1920s or 2000s- the differences between men and women are eternal. A lot of athletes have spoken out against it with logical arguments. There also has been athletes who are pro-transwomen in women’s sports but they don’t provide any actual science. Interestingly I haven’t seen a male speak up for TW in women’s sports, but there’s been a few women wanting to pull up the drawbridge behind them. It is good to have a high profile, sensible trans person speaking out against the madness. Will certainly be interesting to see what the dems do.

GC & QT: What are your views? by PeakingPeachEater in GCdebatesQT

[–]wokuspokus 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

1) GC, as I believe sex us immutable and gender is a social construct that harms both men and women. 2) I was quietly supportive of QT having not read a thing apart from that ‘TERFs are Nazis’ and hadn’t really thought about it. Guess I fully subscribed to ‘be nice’. Saw some tweets about TW in women’s sport, thought ‘What the fresh hell?’, peaked pretty hard and now am very GC.

3)Man: An adult human who underwent the developmental pathway in the womb to have the biological structures evolved to produce sperm.

Woman: An adult human who underwent the developmental pathway in the womb to have the biological structures evolved to produce eggs.

4) Simply, transwoman are men; transmen are women. TW are men presenting as women, TM are women presenting as men. I think trans is due to the harmful idea of gender with homophobia mixed in. If society just accepted people as themselves instead of forcing them to be masculine or feminine we wouldn’t have this mess.

5) Cis makes us a subset of ‘women’. I get a ‘move over for the superior type of woman’ vibe. Hate the term. Natal and biological I use when I need to clarify I don’t mean trans (usually natal as it’s shorter). I’d rather just use ‘women’ for natal women and transmen and ‘men’ for natal men and transwomen but that isn’t clear usually in this debate.

6) My view in this is complex. In competitive or full contact sport: men, transwomen (both biological males) and transmen (equivalent to women on T) compete together. Women compete against women. In the case of a transman who DOES NOT take T (so a natal woman who identifies as a man but does not make any changes to her body)- they compete with women. My view on non-contact, non-competitive sport (this includes training for a team who play in a league) it’s up to the individual people. I.e. a women’s football team that is in a league. To me, a transwoman would be okay to train with us, provided all club members are comfortable (this question would have to be asked anonymously) but not okay to play in league matches. My reasoning for this is that sport is good for mental health and no-one loses out because of the transwoman’s presence.

7) Using pronouns that don’t align with someone’s self-defined gender. I’m really caught between the lines here. I absolutely subscribe to the ‘pronouns are Rohypnol’ school of thought. If I’m communicating with people I know are GC, I will sex people correctly. I cannot bring myself to lie- I will not say a man is a woman or vv. This means I use ‘they’ for trans people a lot- I’m a uni student, known GCers are very few and far between, so most company is assumed to be QT until found to be otherwise. I find wokes accept this as ‘I’m not sure which pronoun this person likes so I will try not to offend’ and you get away with it. One told the preferred pronoun this could definitely ‘out’ me as GC, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

8) Gender is stereotypes that harm both men and women. Sex is male or female, determined by the biological structures you possess and what gametes they evolved to produce.

9) I know a shitload of QT (I’m at university, they’re everywhere). They’re friends (I’m not out GC, and intend to keep it that way until I have to out myself).

10) My friends (except for some close friends) don’t know I’m GC. Those close friends- one of them sarcastically said something ‘rather terfy’, so I outed myself in confidence. But they know to keep quiet and doubly so to not out me (they’re both male and are aware that GC women are treated much worse than GC men).

11) I’d say more neither. They don’t believe gender is a spectrum or in self ID só not QT at all. They still subscribe to the concept of ‘gender’ however so they cannot be GC. I think they’re a third ideology in this debate. They align more closely with GC, but their beliefs are distinctly different. Being anti-QT does not make you GC, it means our ideals have some alignment.

12) Probably that we don’t think transwomen are predators.

I agree with pretty much all of that. I think Redfems don’t like men as a political class which is pretty valid given the way men have treated us over history, however most individual men are fine. I think you can dislike a certain group of people on the whole and still like many individual members. Modern feminism basically centres everything except women (what men want, racism, islamophobia (whatever’s currently on trend for the woke tbh). This leaves radfems as the only ones with an ideology that actually puts women first because they are women.

Given the rarity of heavy periods as a medical condition, not a teenage girl going through the first year of so of mensturation (which tends to be heavier before hormone cycling fully settles), they’re talking nonsense. Not to mention how difficult it is for women to get doctors to take them seriously. There’d have been a handful of kids at the most.

Both sides are right with the reversibility argument. They CAN be reversible, definitely, particularly if treatment is stopped at a reasonably normal age for puberty (so early teens). However, they can also cause irreversible atrophy of the sex organs and infertility.

The risks are too great to give these to a confused child. Someone in their teens who is genuinely dysphoric (no other reason for their MH issues when their actually given some damn therapy and other possibilities explored) should be made aware of the potential side effects, but I’m not fully against it. But only with the safeguards of a full exploration of the patient’s mental health, parental consent, and all parties armed with all the knowledge they need to make a truly informed decision.

How many women get killed a day in the US I wonder....

It’s around 1 every 3 days in the U.K, where’s there’s been no recorded murders of trans people in the last 2 years. I cannot find stats for assaults, but considering at least one women is raped every day...

All those resources that could go into the hidden pandemic of DV, gun violence, improving conviction rates for rape (assuming US rates are really low here, they are in U.K.), laws to make corporations actually pay tax etc are going into this so-called epidemic of violence for which there is ZERO evidence. And it’s taxpayers money.

That last point is it. There’s transsexuals (trying to alleviate an MH condition, not wanting to make people uncomfortable, just trying to get on with their lives- actually feel really sorry for them as they’re lumped in with the whole LGBTwordsalad cack). Then there’s transgender. And TRANS is their whole personality so treat them like their special. Get a kick out of making people uncomfortable. Probably don’t have the same MH issues as transsexual and definitely have narcissistic personality disorder.

I want to go into academia. I am shit scared of outing myself and fucking up my whole life for believing in biology, my own fucking subject that is being twisted beyond recognition. I am a women, and scared of losing the rights my ancestors fought so hard for. I’m bi, and feel unwelcome in LGBT space. And that’s just me.

Women, LGB people, children who would otherwise grow up gay but are now being transed, autistic girls, even our straight male allies (one was recently attacked in Canada), I worry for. We all stand to lose in one way or another. I just hope it ends sooner rather than later.

[–]wokuspokus 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

On the political compass I come out as left, slightly libertarian. That makes me sound really woke! I dislike the left nowadays more than the right- I feel the far left are far more underhand, and more powerful. The far-right are dismissed as idiots (which they are imo- extreme ideologies are always badly flawed, be they left or right). I’m also a feminist, definitely not a liberal feminist, but not quite a radfem either (seriously, WHY are we labelled as liberal or radical with nothing between!). I also believe religion (or rather fundamentalist religion) is one of society’s great evils. I’m politically homeless and if there was a GE now would vote Indy or spoil my ballot. Or vote for a small party if they aligned with my beliefs.

Edit: reading through these answers is reassuring. I was under the impression we’re all somewhere left-of-center, mostly libertarian. Great to see some right-wingers here, and a diversity of views.

Why is it that we have some radical LGB feminist saying that the TRA are men's right activists and alt right. when the TRA are saying that you guys are men's right activist and alt right? men's right activist don't really give a shit about us. by theapplecivilization in LGBDropTheT

[–]wokuspokus 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don’t use it but I can see a pretty firm logic in it. It’s because TRAs focus almost entirely on transwomen** (I.e. men), so they are campaigning for men’s rights (or rather, privileges). It’s also to dissociate them from feminism. Nowadays, trans is a massive part of feminism (which must be intersectional, on pain of cancelling). Taking the ‘trans’ out of what we call these people weakens that association. Does ‘men’s rights activist’ sound in any way feminist to you?

** just want to add that the only time they care about transmen is when they’re telling women what we have to call ourselves. These people despise women.

It’s utter madness, and the U.K. will likely follow- councils will do their own things and Central govt will follow when Labour get in or Liz Truss is not longer women and equalise minister.

I’ve heard fellow biologists say sex is a spectrum and I just wish you could lose your degree in the same way doctors have been struck off when you clearly ignore your supposed subject of expertise.

You’re right about ‘biological appropriation’- it’s exactly that. I only call it ‘cultural appropriation’ as that’s a trigger word and imo more likely to wake the wokes up. But ‘biological’ is more accurate. ‘Cultural’ also implies the gender stereotypes we fight so hard against are out culture, which is pure rubbish.

It’s a strange one. I’m not comfortable with impersonation of women being acceptable (and actually trendy), when impersonation of any other group is generally not okay. That is what offends me. Out of context, does the act itself offend me? No. I feel uncomfortable with some of the language sometimes used, but offended? That’s probably too strong a word.

Imagine me (white bi female) dressing up as a butch lesbian stereotype, or black, or Jewish. It’s homophobic, racist, and racist again. Why is drag (mocking women, often using offensive terms like ‘fish’) ok? Regardless of where it came from, it is sometimes an offensive parody of women (and sometimes it’s not offensive). But then women are the one group one can still go too far with re comedy. For me, it’s more the social issue of women are the one protected group you can stereotype offensively with impunity.

Very much so. I live with a TRA transbian in student housing (I used to be very woke, he had a year in Finland, asked us to get a house with him, I peaked late in the next academic year, but couldn’t dessert him. He does not know I’m a TERF (thank fk Covid means I’ve spent most of the year at home) and wearing the mask is exhausting)). We went to pride a few years back, but now I’m terrified I’ll out myself in front of him or even at pride. One of my other housemates is woke af too.

I can’t not go to pride- he’ll smell a huge rat as I am bi, and it’s almost compulsory to go if your LGB(Tblahblahblah). Glad to be in final year XD

Over 1000 likes and it’s not even considered a single opposing view. What I don’t get is trans people hate others ‘debating their existence’- an argument I think is plain stupid- you clearly exist as your whole misogynistic campaign is going brilliantly. But if you read that as ‘debating how trans people love their lives’ that’s exactly what they’re doing to women (must accept them invading their spaces, prisons, sports) and to gay people. But that’s okay- I guess men have debated how women and gays (lesser men to them) should live their lives for centuries.

GC: Can you give me a definition of male or female that does not exclude those that can not produce or release gametes, have undergone an operation to surgically remove sex organs, etc? by [deleted] in GCdebatesQT

[–]wokuspokus 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Easy. Male: an animal who went through the developmental process in the mother’s womb to have the anatomy that evolved to produce small gametes.

Female: an animal that went through the developmental process in the mother’s womb to have the anatomy that evolved to produce large gametes.

In these definitions, whether the sex organs have been removed, or whether the organs are not fully functional is irrelevant, as the definition is solely based on the development of the fetus.
