Well.. this site is dead. The silly idea that downvotes are a bad thing has prevented users from having the tools needed to adjust what they see. Se we end up with a bunch of gross crap and stupid censorship. The effort to make everyone happy in a centralized manner has predictably resulted in nobody being happy.

[–]whistlepig 23 insightful - 2 fun23 insightful - 1 fun24 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

FTA: Bell's palsy can happen to anyone at any time, and its cause is unknown, though viral respiratory infections are considered a risk factor

False. It is caused by damage of the nerves in the temple area. Happened to me 20 years ago instigated by the flu. The virus got into the bony passage in that area that is basically a small tunnel not much bigger than the nerve that goes through it from your spine to the facial muscles that it controls, like the eyelids and lips and a few others. The infection caused that area of the nerve to inflame which caused it to expand, but since it can't expand beyond the bony canal it damages itself in that area. Each side affecting its side of the face. Only one side being affected is more common. No surprise it caused the worst headaches of my life that the most disgusting pharma painkillers didn't really help much. Happened to both sides of my face and I had to tape my eyes shut to sleep, add eye goo because they would dry out, I couldn't smile (and therefore it was impossible to be happy) and did I mention the constant headaches? Took about a year before most of the nerves grew back. Headaches went away and eyes could eventually close. One side of my smile still doesn't work as well, but as far as I am concerned I'm "fully" healed.

It was brutal and a person would have to be very evil and have caused wanton death of innocents for me to wish such a thing upon them.

My point being that I view such a risk to be a VERY BIG deal.

There are a lot of medium or smaller hardware stores that sell most of the same stuff and it doesn't take a couple minutes to walk from one end to the other. As far as building supplies and lumber there are local institutions that the commercial guys frequent that would also be happy to sell to you as well. It all kind of depends on your locale though. Also there are franchises like "Builders Discount Centers".

Edit: I'll add that I've already boycotted about half the big box stores in my area this spring since they got people waiting in line outside and wearing muzzles. None of the other stores I mentioned are like that. The only reason I go to those big box stores is because of speed and I'm already in the area.

Partially... I agree. But mainly it was the introduction of subreddit mods that opened the door to censorship and the massage amount of group think that we have grown use to. I don't think everyone is aware, but for the first 3 years there were no subreddits or mods. The whole point of the voting system was so that the platform would be self-moderating and individual users could choose what specific voting level they wanted to view.

Many are basically small private businesses. They got mortgages on the property as well as their own house that they live in. They are counting on those rent payments to pay all of those mortgages. Just like those that are renting from them they often don't have much buffer saved up and hold a lot of debt. Your so-called evil landlords are often just as desperate as your perception of the renters. In some cases ... more so. A renter may be able to hold on to their money and move into a roommate situation somewhere and save money. A owner is committed to the agreement they made with their bank several years ago.

Also... many of these landlords have day jobs. Many lost those day jobs like the renters you are sympathizing with. Not that there is anything wrong with sympathizing with the renters, but my point is that many of the landlord might have earned a little sympathy as well.

Personally I was a fan of the way reddit did it when that site was first created. The point of the voting was two fold. One to vote things up so people can judge what the public thinks is worth checking out, but also the ability to down vote for the opposite reason. At the time there were no moderators. The voting system allowed all individuals to adjust the voting level of comments and posts they wanted to have displayed and hidden. Sure reddit was completely loaded with the kind of comments and posts we're bitching about presently, but they always had negative votes within an hour or less so you didn't see them unless you had thick skin and voluntarily turned on the "show all" option.

This was great for me (who has thick skin) and also for everyone else (and occasionally me when i wasn't in the mood) who didn't. Unfortunately as the site gained popularity there was an influx of people who didn't get it, the site went corporate, and being corporate they became nervous about having the ugliness on their site. And here we are.

Maybe ruqqus or others will be able to bring that system back. Voat tried, but I think you're right. It got swamped by the manipulators before it could balance out. Clearly you have a different idea. So far it has worked well. Although I worry about it not having a method for the individual to easily hide content they don't want to see.

[–]whistlepig 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

my brain hurts....

The obvious question that isn't answered is how does this person define "rape"?

About 15 years ago I was dating a women like this (unknowlingly)... I learned. It all came to a crashing halt when she decided to tell me a story about how she once got dressed up with a friend and went bar hopping, got drunk and went home with a guy who was also drunk. And then after the fact wishes she hadn't of done that. Instead of owning the mistake she decided to call it "rape" because she was drunk.

Yes.. this is the same thing as saying she thinks women are inferior people and not as capable of being responsible for their actions as males.

Needless to say, I found this to be very shocking and more than a little scary since we already had sex a few times and typically had a few beers in us. So that was the end of that. At any rate that was my introduction to how open the term "rape" is to interpretation.

Yep.. I remember too. I also remember how good slashdot.org use to be before they hired "editors".

With that said.. aren't we talking about a massive amount of bandwidth? Site owner was saying in another post last week that it is entirely paid for by voluntary "donations". A fact that needs to be advertised more because I don't think many people are aware of it. That is a great model, but I think it needs to be a more front and center element of the site. Right now it is hidden in small type in the footer where I don't think people are seeing it often. I also think "support" is a better word than "donate" At any rate, I don't think the site owner presently is interested in growing the site. I heartily agree that he does need to start taking it seriously, but I'm not sure he wants to.

I don't know if I agree. Depends on how you define "social media". If you're talking about twitter, facebook and such that are more perversions of the word "social", then yea, but there are so many other forms of "social media" that have the opposite affect. The obvious being forums and many other similar groups. I recall an irc channel I use to frequent almost daily between 95-03 and that definitely brought people together. We even occasionally met up at relevant trade shows and partied together. Those were some good friends.

I think what is being portrayed here is the crazy dogma that was also happening around the world about 100 years ago and led to nazi germany, communist russia and those kinds of affects it had on the cultures of many other countries even if they didn't end up going quite as extreme. It wasn't happening organically then, nor is it now.

I'd love to know what techniques they used... but if they could do that in the night while weakened by being on the boat for 8 days, then I assume it must not have been as hard as I would imagine.

This is a delivery from a mail service company or print shop to the local post office. You know.. the guys you send your mailing job to so they'll stuff and address those 50,000 envelopes for you and sort the whole thing. They (we) typically use these USPS bins to store and then transport them to the post office when done.

The fact that they are in open bed trucks just makes this more obvious. Post office isn't going to make a habit of using open bed trucks. It would be too much of a pain. These guys probably had less than a mile to drive and looks like they taped down top sheets to keep stuff from flying out.

In fact... I'd bet this is one of those few print shops that spends money on the print union dues so they can get the Democrat party print jobs during election season. The democrat party and their candidates are only allowed to use union printers. This is probably a smaller local print shop. If you only have a couple employees the dues are less and I know of several who really make that work by all the large jobs they get during elections. This is probably a bunch of those 8.5x11 flyers we all got back in October that they stayed up late to print 100,000 of and bring to the post office when done. You pretty much get to name your price in these situations.

Although the idea of unions makes my skin crawl, I admit to a little jealousy of the other shops who spent the money to pay off the union when election season comes around. The republicans just don't spend as freely. ;]
