Explained rationally, almost everyone in the world can agree with at least some of them. The objective must not be to set 50% against the other 50%, but to unite the 99% of honest people against the 1% of elites."

Keep the focus on the issues and causes. Avoid attributing your ideas to one side or the other, which only invites people to dismiss your ideas out-of-hand. If it is truly a good idea, something that will make the world a better place, then it will appeal to most people who listen to them. Don't unnecessarily give them a reason to avoid reading/listening.

Politics seems to attract crazy people. Rallies seem to attract violent people. Crazy and violent people seem to attract news reporters - "if it bleads it leads." Crazy violent people steal the focus and are a setback. Promoting good solid solutions is not as dramatic.

Ah word-smithing, the favorite pass-time of law-makers. They are not banning the words for family members. They are just cleaning up some cumbersome language - changing "mother or father" to "parent", "brother or sister" to "sibling", etc. in specific places in this particular document, where they have specified a long list of family members that this particular law applies to. It reads a little easier with half as many words and has the same meaning. Y'all are so melodramatic!

A few years back I read a book by some sort of brain scientist, I forget the details, but their research showed that people start with the conclusion and then they look for supporting evidence, although they believe the opposite - that they have arrived at the conclusion after weighing the evidence. This is due to the bio-mechanical structure of our brains, that's how the mechanism works, the neural pathways and such. Once a position is taken, people will posit and believe all sorts of unrealistic scenarios to support their position, tolerating high levels of cognitive dissonance, resisting changing their minds as long as they can hold out. Sorry I don't have a link, it was an interesting book.

Here in Iowa, back in the 1970's, meat packing was unionized, and a meat packer could make a good living, support a family, save for retirement. http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/250/meat-packing.html Field work like detassling corn was a quick way to make some money. Now these are low-wage jobs, and every so often ICE will come, arrest and deport a bunch of people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postville_raid But meat prices are lower, so there is that. Small family farmers are no longer the norm. The economics are quite different. You ask "Do illegal immigrants help the US financially?" but I don't see a monolithic "the US", I see a many-faceted economy and culture. Corporate interests are served by the low-wage workers that are easily cheated and manipulated with threats of deportation, and this erodes a certain level of decency in society. When I approached a lawmaker about wage theft - workers not being paid https://www.wagetheft.org/faq - he seemed to think that only citizens deserved the protection of government. Your question seems to suggest that our neighbors are not deserving of public services. Shame on us if we fail to be compassionate!

[–]wendolynne 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

If I'm using google translate correctly, "Autoritätsdusel " is a compound word made of two words:

Autoritäts = of authority, and

dusel = fluke, luck, happenstance

The rest of the phrase translates directly. Maybe it should be: Accidental authority is the greatest enemy of truth.

The sense being, just because someone has credentials doesn't necessarily mean they know everything, but it is hard to convince people that you are right when you contradict authority.

Every so often a religion or a nation will come along that feels obligated to destroy the works of previous civilizations. A recent example: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/1326063/After-1700-years-Buddhas-fall-to-Taliban-dynamite.html It's not hard to imagine the Christians of yore destroying any evidence which contradicted their assertion that the earth was created 6000 years ago. they certainly destroyed the histories and science maintained by pagan people of Northern Europe (i.e. the witch burnings) and the Inca in South America. It's not hard to imagine that something similar might have happened over and over in the past 200,000 years that homo sapiens has been around, according to the current theories of modern anthropologists. Objects made of metals oxidize fairly quickly - copper buckles have turned into green smears in archaeological sites only 500 years old. While hiking in the wilderness I have come across abandoned automobiles less than 100 years old that are just rust, barely holding the shape of a car. I sincerely doubt micro-circuitry is going to last for millennia without careful conservation. Plastics either.

Glaciers have tremendous power to grind stone objects into gravel, very little would still be recognizable if it was built in the path of the Ice Age glaciers.

So I think your estimation of probability is a bit low.

In the years after, MMR vaccination rates among 2-year-olds in England dropped below 80%. But the claim began to unravel in 2004 after journalist Brian Deer reported undisclosed conflicts of interest: Wakefield had applied for a patent on his own measles vaccine and had received money from a lawyer trying to sue companies making the MMR vaccine. Citing further concerns about ethics and misrepresentation, The Lancet retracted the paper in 2010. You find a web-based community small enough that you won't attract too much attention, and kind enough to let you in. You command your bots to join and to contribute to the community. Being bots, they don't have a lot to contribute to the conversation, but being bots, that doesn't stop them. Aspirations. Saidit aspires to be a site for high quality debate. It often falls short, unfortunately. The insults and strawmanning are a bigger threat to Saidit than the lack of jailbait, in my opinion. To your point, how can Saidit do both: support free speech and maintain civility, so that interesting things can happen here, and so that people want to be here and participate? Can we have a high quality debate on that? The other aspiration, something vague about being a replacement for Reddit, IDK.

From the headline I expected to find a bunch of liberal-bashing that would make me uncomfortable. When I read the article I was pleasantly surprised that it was quite balanced and not insulting at all. The article also shows: Republicans have in general a much wider perception gap than Democrats. People who share political articles on social media have a wider perception gap. Does that feel like an attack? Does it make you frightened or angry? do you feel like you have to lash out at me? Maybe, maybe not.

"Each of us can play a role in bridging the Perception Gap. We can choose a wider range of news sources to better understand different perspectives. We can refuse to be manipulated into outrage by reducing our exposure to social media feeds that amplify the views of the partisan Wings, rather than the Exhausted Majority. And finally, we can seek to build connections with people who think differently from us. Directly engaging with people whose experiences and views differ from our own makes it harder for us to see them as the enemy."

I hope that Saidit is a place where I can directly engage with people with different views.

Ah, I see the confusion now. This article is about the "Social Justice Warriors" (SJW), a very vocal and radical subset of the left. I don't claim to represent them. The author of the article appears to be a liberal who is also frustrated by trying have a rational discussion with these SJW.

There are lots of factions on the Left, and it is a mistake to assume everyone is locked into a common groupthink.

As for blaming the enlightenment for racism, there may be some truth to it, or not, this article does not address that claim, which is what I was specifically asking for.

If you had a volcano that was predictable, so you knew where the lava was going to flow, you put your forms in its path and wait. Maybe the forms are made from something like plywood sheets that end up getting burnt completely, but leave blocks that fit snugly along that space where the plywood was before. Maybe the dimples on so many of the blocks are where there was a vent in the form allowing air to escape so the form fills completely.

A lot of these stones are basalt, which is volcanic.

"One of the worst things a person could do is hurt a defenseless animal" - see photos of well-known conservatives proudly posing with the dead elephants and lions that they just shot. "Justice is the most important requirement for a society" - why then the push-back on the BLM movement? They are only asking for justice. The confusing thing about conservatives is that they seem to tolerate a high level of cognitive dissonance. I hope you can understand that it is kind of hard to understand someone who can hold contradictory opinions simultaneously. Or maybe words like "defenseless" and "justice" have different meanings, that also would also make it hard to understand.

So, do you support Trump's demand to repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act? Because suppressing comments will happen a lot more often without Section 230 protection. Seems the major platforms are feeling some social responsibility, and have started censoring, even though they have protection. Without this protection it will get a lot worse.

Bold assumption. Ironic that you should feel that way, meanwhile destroying our democratic government seems to be the current agenda for the right, or rather loyal-to-the-narcissist side. Is it wrong to want a society that functions for everyone? Or do you believe, zero-sum fashion, that to be functional for white people requires that society be dysfunctional for everyone else? Thanks for the link - which I would call "watching the sausage being made." The poll workers don't get a much of a dress rehearsal, and they don't always get clear instructions, or understand them even if they seem clear. And they might not be good with crowds, if one shows up. A lot of this is unfortunate, and we have to do the best we can with what we have got. throwing out a whole precinct's votes because of one confused poll worker would be not at all fair to the people who voted in good faith.

Leads changing as the ballots are counted is very typical. I've seen it so many times, where my candidate takes an early lead and later ends up losing. The explanation: ballots coming from big cities with efficient counting systems often post their results first, while the rural votes take longer to tabulate. That's just the way these things go. Similarly with mail-in ballots compared to in-person voting. So those stories are not at all convincing to me, since I have been on the other side so many times.

I can't claim to have studied the rules of every state, but I would expect as standard procedure, there would be ways of verifying that ballots are not counterfeit, that the voters casting the ballots are registered, and registered voters are legal to vote, in every state, county, and precinct. That would be standard procedure, although each jurisdiction is free to make its own rules. I find it hard to believe that fraudulent voting on the scale to change the outcome could have occurred.

The "evidence" list is indeed long, but actual fraud is very hard to find in that long list. A much shorter and more precise demonstration of actual significant fraud would be more effective. A few votes here and there will not change the results. You need to accept the fact that a significant number of American citizens, indeed a majority of voters, do not want Trump to have a second term. That's the fact. Get over it.

no 'judiciously cognizable interest' means the court does not find any reason that Texas should be trying to tell other states how to run their elections. Mind your own business, in other words.

So sorry that happened to you. Stealing individual votes such as you experienced is a very tedious way to throw an election. While it might be successful for local races, it is unlikely to have an impact on national races where the margins are bigger. No doubt over the years there has been some fraud on both sides, there is a lot of history demonstrating that. And probably always will be, the stakes are high, it is so tempting.

Some states like Alaska and Colorado have been using mail-in ballots for years and have developed safe-guards, their citizens are confident in their system. Other states could learn from them. https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2020/10/01/colorado-mail-in-ballot-absentee-voting-how-state-perfected-system/3572176001/

Internet voting will be the next big thing. We will have to do the regulation all over again so that everyone can be comfortable with that.

We as an electorate in general we seem to have lost the attitude that our opponents are the 'loyal opposition' - that they mean well, just have different ideas about the best way to govern. So many mean and scary things are said about the opposition. Fear not, Biden's presidency won't be that bad. He and the Democrats mean well, and will do their best. There will be another chance in four years.

Early returns often do not reflect the final vote count. Happens every election. This election was a bit unusual, usually the Dems are ahead early because the big cities are quicker to tally and report the vote, and the cities are more democratic than the rural areas. In this election the Democrats encouraged voting by mail, while the republicans discouraged it. Dems are generally afraid of covid and Reps generally are not. So of course the mail-in vote, which was counted later, was heavily democratic. The article claims statistical improbability, but lacks the mathematical rigor to prove the claim.
