Isn't it fucked up how we're 4 months from the election and Biden still hasn't announced his VP pick? What do you think is going on behind the scenes? by [deleted] in politics

[–]wahala 11 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

No, it's not fucked up. Neither major party has even had its nominating convention yet. As a way of example, McCain didn't announce he chose Palin until 8/29/2008. The RNC convention that year started 9/4/2008. Therefore, his choice wasn't made public until 5 days prior. Obama did name Biden as his choice about 2 months out in 2008. Ultimately, Biden doesn't actually have the nomination yet. He may never get to make a VP pick (unlikely, but possible).

That and any environmental concerns. I mean, there's nothing to explode here, like a rocket, so the typical impact zones that we have in many space ports areas/surrounds, are nullified. I don't know how a failure of the elevator would impact the environment, and for how large of an area. Definitely seems possible, just has to be a deliberate process.

Funny coincidence, just the other day I was listening to an old Art Bell-hosted Coast to Coast AM from 8/21/2005, with guest Sir Charles Shults III (https://www.coasttocoastam.com/show/2005-08-21-show/). They discussed the space elevator, and were very keen that it could be possible. Sir Charles felt that funding really was the only hold back, and that the technology already existed. It was refreshing to hear their optimism.

What is most demoralizing about the news for someone like me is their fanatical adherence to a left/right, conservative/liberal ideology, leaving no room for the middle/silent majority. Most of us aren't on one end of any political spectrum, but the news only addresses those that are. But it's all really just about the ad space/sales.

It wasn't really a controversy, despite the headline. Professor Hsu just used real math to back up his studies and the Woke objected to his use of...science. The kicker for me is this article says it only took a mere 500 petitioners to remove this extremely qualified individual from his research role, despite there being a counter 1400 petitioners wanting to keep him around. Literal definition of mob-rule.

Mom's best advice to me growing up was to 'kill 'em with kindness'. She would explain that most people find it really difficult to be mean/rude/condescending to you if you are sincerely nice to them. Many decades later, and it still holds true.

Back in 2008, when Obama became president, one of our black neighbors started acting rude toward us. They even went so far as to put up a tall fence between our properties.

We had already been neighbors for over 5 years prior to this, and on very friendly terms. We were quite surprised at this change in attitude, and really couldn't figure out why. The only thing that had changed was the president. We were not deterred, and keeping mama's advice in mind, we continued to chip away and be the nice neighbors we have always been. We would bring them fresh food when it came our way and share items from our garden. They begrudgingly started to come around.

Twelve years later and we are still neighbors, and now are back to being just as friendly as ever. In fact, probably more so in the last year or two. We even split costs on some tree removal to our mutual benefit. To this date, we really are not sure what caused the rift, but our continued, relentless kindness healed that rift, and we are good friends now.

Very compelling article. Thank you for sharing it. This statement hits the crux of the issue:

"She’d (Lenya Quinn-Davidson) like to get Californians back closer to the fire culture in the Southeast where, she said, “Your average person goes out back with Grandpa, and they burn 10 acres on the back 40 you know, on a Sunday.” Fire is not just for professionals, not just for government employees and their contractors. Intentional fire, as she sees it, is “a tool and anyone who’s managing land is going to have prescribed fire in their toolbox.”

Californians seems to be completely unable to do anything for themselves and rely on their nanny gov't to care for all aspects of their adult-lives. We don't have mega-fires in the SE for this exact reason. Our culture is ok with prescribed burns and we don't lean on our gov'ts only to do them for us.

Let California burn. They can always rebuild.

I'm the sous-chef in the house so I'm not the best person to ask. We do southern-ize our tamales and use pulled pork that we smoke for the meat. We get a ton of meals out of all that (the pulled pork, then the tamales). We keep the tamales really simple: masa, pork, pepper sauce and steam in a husk. We serve with more pepper sauce, a little queso, salsa, and sour cream.

Our food trucks leave a lot to be desired...I did see one that specialized in British food down by the boat ramp a couple weeks back and it left me wondering who would eat that fare and why there.

Sorry for completely derailing this topic.
