They're convinced the alleged rate is all down to transphobia. Suicide because of all the abuse and rejection rather than because of any effect of the condition itself.

Of course, this wasn't observed in gay people or any other group that suffered abuse and rejection, so it doesn't explain it, but that tends to be their answer.

They'll also use the opposite justification, that it is caused by the condition, when arguing for medical intervention in trans-identifying children/teens.

I don't know that people think its feminist discourse specifically that's led to it, so much as 'social justice warrior-ism'. The tactics that have been developed - the shutting down discussion, accusing your opponent of being a sexist/racist/transphobe, claiming victory through smears and censorship, the language of oppressor and oppressed - we saw them used by feminists with the whole 'Gamergate' thing for example, but they aren't inherent to feminist discourse. And now they're largely being used against feminists by transactivists.

Nowadays there's a clear and obvious schism between the two, but that's only developed over the last few years. "These tactics will be used against you one day" was a prediction regularly made back in the 'gamergate' days - and now here we are.

GC: Intersex conditions show that males can release eggs, get periods, get pregnant, etc, and females can produce sperm, have a penis, etc, which makes the words male and female meaningless? by [deleted] in GenderCritical

[–]supersmokio6420 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, there are no recorded cases of a true human hermaphrodite -capable of producing both sexes gamete.

An intersex 'male' that can get pregnant and has ovaries is actually an intersex female - this is where the term "Assigned x at birth" actually comes from. They're actually female, but were put down as male based on external anatomy.

You're right that it comes down to sperm and egg production. There's no such thing as a female able to produce sperm or a male able to produce egg because to produce eggs is what female is, and likewise with sperm and male.

I definitely am more forgiving. I can't see him as a phony because his books on evolution are legitimate, they're what got me so fascinated by the topic and he is an accomplished scientist in his field.

But he does tend to weigh into things without getting the full picture, and you're right he could have been clearer. He should have at least put in a line after the Republican bigots bit saying that they aren't the only ones criticizing these things.

My dream right now would be for him to come out with a new book specifically on biological sex, how and why it evolved, sexual selection, how it works in plants vs animals, etc. Don't frame it as debunking trans ideology, just lay out the science as it really is. I doubt it will happen but something like that would be a great resource if it did.

That was me. I would point out that that tweet is from the RDFRS, his society, not him. Although it bears his name its its own organization with staff and he won't be the one tweeting from that account. The phrasing doesn't sound like his writing and as you've pointed out, he's also endorsed a GC book. So I'd put that down as someone made a poor choice in hiring at the Foundation rather than suggesting anything about Dawkins' views.

My take on this tweet is look at it at face value:

I do not intend to disparage trans people. I see that my academic “Discuss” question has been misconstrued as such and I deplore this.

He clearly didn't intend to, and he's far from the first person to get attacked for asking questions and trying to have a discussion.

It was also not my intent to ally in any way with Republican bigots in US now exploiting this issue.

This is the narrative that's presented, headlines about "Republican Anti-Trans Bills" and such. Its a common TRA attack - "you're just conservative/bigots/etc", even though that isn't the intent of GC people. So its a true statement.

What it suggests to me is that he doesn't know about GC as a 'thing'. He's baffled/bemused by the hostility of the response to his first tweet, and trying to issue reassurances that his question didn't come from a place of bigotry, assuming - as many have before - that honest questions will be well received.

I'd almost describe as like the moment when someone is pre-Peak Trans, except without ever having been acquainted with the Trans side first.

Its obviously unfortunate that that's what he chose to say. But I'd have to put it down to simply ignorance of the situation, not malice or having been taking in by unscientific arguments.

Its based on using cladistic definitions. All tetrapods (mammals, reptiles, ampibians) are members of the Sarcopterygii clade, 'lobe finned fish'.

Lobe finned fish are all members of Ostiechthyes, 'bony fish', a group which includes most types of fish.

Sharks however are members of Chondrichthyes, 'cartilaginous fish'.

Both the bony and cartilaginous fish are members of Gnathostomata, 'jawed vertebrates'.

With a group like mammals, there's a last common ancestor where you can say that everything descended from it is a mammal. But with fish, there's no last common ancestor that would include everything we think of as a 'fish' without also including all tetrapods.

There's zero consistency. I keep meaning to start saving and organizing TRA answers by common talking point to bring up when someone contradicts one. The point about what exactly is gender and whether its an internal property of the brain, or just a collection of cultural stereotypes, is one that's especially woolly. Its whatever it needs to be for their argument at the time.

Even when its in a left-wing paper they won't - their minds are already made up and they 'know' anyone who asks any questions is just a bigot masquerading hate with false concern. The Guardian has published some trans-critical pieces and they just dismiss it as a 'terf rag' for that reason. Its maddening.

No doubt virtue signalling plays a part, but porn is addictive and makes it harder to get hard when actually with a woman, so some guys are against it for that reason rather than out of concern for women.

It also spawned hand-wringing comment pieces about whether it’s “morally right” to “experiment” on trans children.

Anti-trans claims – calling puberty blockers “risky” and “experimental”, and questioning whether trans children are “too young” to know what they want – were repeated, unquestioningly, in headline after headline.

The use of language says it all. How deep into the ideology do you have to be to dismiss the very notion that there even might be cause for concern so callously?

It should be remembered that Joanna Cherry, the most notable 'terf' MP, is also in the Scottish National Party. Notice how OP has written Scottish Nationalist Party instead - that's a telltale sign that they're posting with another agenda.

They're also trying to pin it specifically on SNP members when the TRA problem in the SNP is one that is affecting all left of centre parties, including the Lib-dems and Labour. The petition the article is talking about is directed at all of these parties and there's nothing to suggest the signatures come from mainly SNP members.

[–]supersmokio6420 20 insightful - 1 fun20 insightful - 0 fun21 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Asexuality literally means "without sexuality"; by definition its the lack of a sexuality, not a sexuality itself.

Same as how for example something that is achromatic doesn't have a colour: it lacks a colour.

[–]supersmokio6420 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The author has to be trolling. The wolf's explicitly shown to be just pretending to be nice the entire time they're supposedly making friends, and then goes to sleep thinking about how tasty sheep are.

Why include all that if you're really trying to promote the apparent message of acceptance? Surely if that was the intent you'd show the wolf genuinely trying to fit in with the sheep, not keep hinting that it still really does want to eat them.

The only way it makes sense is if its been created specifically to start a conversation about the kind of thing that can sneak through in these books. Past efforts to call out questionable messaging in childrens books get the complainer written off as right-wing bigots before the book even gets examined, so maybe its just about getting a really blatant example out there?

That's true about the court cases, I do worry about the lies and smearing working though. A poster there who claims not to have heard of them before just unquestioningly accepts someone telling him they're a hate group.

Then again it does seem like they're being listened to by the people that matter; e.g. the BBC giving them a comment. The Labour Party also seems to be less willing to bow to the trolls now - it doesn't seem to be acknowledging any of their demands over Rosie Duffield, Jess Phillips, etc.

If things do continue in that direction, I suspect it will be very hard to find anyone who admits to having backed them before. They'll always find a way to pretend they were always on the so called 'right side of history'.

Like half the people who were ID'd as "historical lesbians" before trans visibility started to go mainstream are very clearly transmasculine to at least some degree - like, ok, there's ambiguity, but, it seems like the more explicit the transmasculine identity, the more the guy gets claimed as a lesbian specifically

What the fuck are they even talking about? How could you possibly distinguish between someone being "transmasculine" and just a woman that took part in some activity or owned objects considered masculine?

I'm straight and have been following the antics of the alphabet brigade since right back in the days of 'gamergate', and particularly since the Evergreen college stuff went down in the states, sort of via the so called 'intellectual dark web'.

Generally I find that although most straight people are basically unaware of all that's going on, they're naturally inclined to GC views and are aware the TQ+ don't represent LGB people.
