What made you peak trans? by [deleted] in GenderCritical

[–]soundsituation 8 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It didn't take much. I never believed in gender ideology and didn't think that anyone else seriously did either. In high school I knew one trans-identified person, a gay man who went by a woman's name and put a lot of effort into looking feminine when he went out to clubs. No preferred pronouns, no discussion of queer theory, no using the women's restroom, no insistence even that he had been born in the wrong body, though perhaps he felt that way. That was pretty much the extent of my exposure to "trans" people until some fifteen years later when unhinged straight men started popping up on r/actuallesbians and talking about girldick and shit. I was never okay with that and when I spoke up, got banned, found my way to r/GenderCritical and learned the full horrific extent of what was going on, that was it for me.

Aminatou Seyni just won a 200m race at the 2022 World Athletics Championships - really unfair - why was this person allowed to compete? by bootylicious in news

[–]soundsituation 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

XY DSD athletes are barred from competing in the women's 400-1500 races. The ban isn't confined to those disciplines for any logical reason, but was meant to be an ad hoc solution to the Caster Semenya situation a few years back. As for why they are allowed to compete with women at all, I think it's because of the legal precedent established when Maria Jose Martinez Patino, a former elite hurdler and XY DSD athlete, sued the IAAF in the late 80s/early 90s. She won her case and opened the door for other XY DSD athletes to participate in women's sports.

They're actually okay with double standards because they believe their side claims the exclusive moral right to violence: Repressive Tolerance.

Marcuse now turns to answering the question of what a Repressive Tolerance should look like, including what it must suppress and what it must tolerate, including the sorts of violence and extralegal behaviors it must tolerate. The statement, which we arrive at near the end of this part, is simple, in Marcuse’s own words: “Liberating tolerance, then, would mean intolerance against movements from the Right and toleration of movements from the Left.”

Like any heuristic it trades accuracy for cognitive efficiency. I think the practice is especially widespread these days due to the rise of identity politics, and thus the tendency to view things as primarily representative of ascribed group values. And because ideology has increasingly supplanted epistemological soundness in education, people aren't as quick to recognize the guilt by association fallacy.

[–]soundsituation 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Maybe, but I was also trying to address the finding that I quoted in my response, that individual sport athletes fare worse in mental health than students who don't do any sports at all. There must be a reason that individual exercise supports mental health but individual sports evidently do not, which is why I think competition/pressure must be a factor. And again, in American schools individual sports are done with teams. I agree that they're less mutually dependent than team sports, but they still foster team bonding, mutual accountability and working towards shared goals. But yeah I'm not especially surprised that team > individual, more that no sports > individual.

However, to our surprise, youth who participated in only individual sports, such as gymnastics or tennis, had more mental health difficulties compared to those who did not participate in organized sports," the study said.

I wonder why that is, especially since, at the school level anyway, individual sports are organized within a team framework. My guess is that it’s because individual performances are much more high-pressure and anxiety producing. Take away the competitive element from individual sports and you basically just have exercise, which ofc benefits mental health. There might also be an insane parent factor at play; sports like gymnastics and figure skating get a lot of those.

I agree strongly with all of this. And I like that he specified mutual admiration rather than mutual respect. While respect is vital to a good relationship and probably sufficient for a good marriage, I think you need mutual admiration for true romantic love. You need to idealize each other a little bit.

The only thing I'd add to this is passion. Lust doesn't actually really fade in my experience. Maybe you don't fuck every day like you did in the beginning, but desire is pretty consistently present if the relationship is good. And yes, people age, but attraction dynamically adapts as you get older. I wasn't attracted to 40 year olds when I was 18 but I am now. And I'm not attracted to people in their 60s now but I'm sure I will be when I'm around that age.

Anyway that's my tangent. Great list.

What's with queer people and entitlement? Why do they always go hand on a hand?

To put it in very simple terms, the current thinking of the far left is that all inequalities are socially constructed. If you are aggrieved and oppressed (but only according to the official rubric of intersectional oppression), it's never a you problem, and always a society problem. There's also the fact that most social media sites reinforce this entitlement, enabling the worst people to make insane demands.

Thanks for the well thought out reply. I think everything you've laid out here makes sense, although despite knowing how curated some sites are I was not aware of how widespread the practice of erasing all discussion of infiltration is. I think that is probably the biggest contributor to the general lack of awareness.

Also admins don't want to show any public weakness to attackers, or else attackers might get ideas and new motivations.

I could be wrong, but I think the list of motivations is quite small and that once you're aware of it you can usually see through the superficially different manifestations.

He criticizes Trump for being a populist who didn't follow through on any of the promises that got him elected, and he criticizes the establishment in general for being a one-party oligarchy. I don't think he's shilling for the right at all. In fact, except for free speech and vaccine/mask mandates, I don't know of a single issue on which he agrees with Republicans. But it's true that the vast majority of his criticism targets the American left. I actually just listened to an interview he did with Triggernometry where he explains why; he quotes someone (can't remember the name) who basically says that if you want policy to move left, you have to push Democrats left. Sure you can complain about Republicans opposing progressive initiatives, but everyone already knows about that, and Republicans don't claim any different. The Democrats somehow still have a veneer of progressivism, but by and large they don't back it up. They also do the same things that Republicans get (sometimes rightly) called out for, but few seem to call them on it or even be aware of it. That's why Dore leverages most of his criticism at the left.
