And we'll be left with the libertarian dream. Resources will already be consolidated as densely into the hands of a small minority as possible, with most services and goods already monopolized. But with the well-studied ability to predict and manipulate people thanks to decades of datamining and research coupled with already-existing mass surveillance (both government and corporate), it'll be easy to keep people distracted and consuming 24/7, all custom-tailored for each individual.

How exactly is that a "libertarian" dream? If you're talking about right-libertarians, this sounds like the opposite of a competitive, healthy economy. For left-libertarians, this is a jackboot nightmare.

The issues he is describing should be addressed, though, and it does seem like they have some problems in their bug management processes.

They are the "normal" people and there are tons of them, but you'll never see them unless you're out in the world and looking for them.

Wannabe "influencers" who spend all day on social media are not "normal". They are either in school, unemployed, have bullshit desk jobs, or they work a slow retail job and stare at their phones all day. There are many of them, but not as many as it seems.

I guess what I'm saying is take heart, social media is not representative of reality.

This is how I remembered it as well, but someone in another discussion reminded me about conservative talk/TV hosts getting people fired and shows cancelled. Focus on the Family, Glenn Beck, etc all pulled these sorts of campaigns. I wish I had links for you but I can assure you it did happen, if you doubt it then a little research should bring it up.

What has changed, other than the outrage culture mob moving to the left, is that the mob is now empowered by social media to coordinate and move more quickly. This makes them much more powerful than the conservative cancellers were.

Edit: social media also allows anyone to start a cancel campaign, whereas previously you had to be a public figure in order to get any traction.

Because unfortunately the English language lacks a good word for being against a religious/cultural group. The word antisemitism was coined to give a word to the specific problems faced by Jews. To my knowledge nobody has done the same for Islam, for example. (People tend to say you are "racist" if you are anti-Islamic, ignoring that Islam stretches across all races.)

Don't reuse identities. It's tempting to build a well-known identity by using the same name across different websites, but it only builds your ego and makes you more attached to that identity. Then you get afraid that something might happen to it, and bans have a huge impact. It also makes it easier for people to stalk/dox you.

It's liberating when you fully embrace throwaway handles. You don't have to worry as much about karma or reputation. The only downside is that it's harder to make friends across platforms, but these days I find it hard to do that anyway. There's too many suspicious people fishing for personal details.

Yeah, I mildly supported the social justice movement back in 2013 or so, back before things were completely insane. They were raising some legitimate issues, but something changed. From the outside it looked like opportunists seized the infrastructure of these groups to use in their own quest for power. The same thing happened in many small hobby/interest groups at around the same time. Outsiders swarmed in and tried to take over, forcing out the old leadership.

Thanks for the clarification. It's been a long time since I read the book, so I'm not really informed enough to have a good discussion on the specifics of it. I do remember feeling that it seemed somewhat politicized, possibly compromising the "science" (social science lol), and that surely there must exist left-wing authoritarians as well.

This is interesting, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authoritarian_personality:

The research on ideology, politics, and racist prejudice, by John Duckitt and Chris Sibley, identified two types of authoritarian worldview: (i) that the social world is dangerous, which leads to right-wing authoritarianism; and (ii) that the world is a ruthlessly competitive jungle, which leads to social dominance orientation. In a meta-analysis of the research, Sibley and Duckitt explained that the social-dominance orientation scale helps to measure the generalization of prejudice and other authoritarian attitudes that can exist within social groups. Although both the right-wing authoritarianism scale and the social-dominance orientation scale can accurately measure authoritarian personalities, the scales usually are not correlated.

"Social dominance orientation" sounds similar to the implicit goals of many in the social justice movement. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_dominance_orientation:

Individuals who score high in SDO desire to maintain and, in many cases, increase the differences between social statuses of different groups, as well as individual group members. Typically, they are dominant, driven, tough, and seekers of power. People high in SDO also prefer hierarchical group orientations. Often, people who score high in SDO adhere strongly to belief in a "dog-eat-dog" world.

See the "anti-egalitarian" scale specifically. Counter-intuitively, seeking "equality" is a no-no among social justice types. The theory is flawed because once again "authoritarian" is implicitly coupled to "right-wing", but there may be a grain of truth somewhere in there.

It is possible that during the Obama era, many of the "social dominance" authoritarians saw which way the wind was blowing and switched sides to maintain their position on the top of the social pyramid. This would explain why their general behaviors are the same, but the specifics are different. It would also explain why so many who supported Bush and his wars have now aligned themselves with the socjus cult and superficial "woke" progressivism.

It is also possible that authoritarians (however they are defined) are healthier when their group is in control. This would make sense, as I'd imagine that fellow authoritarians would look out for each other and prioritize each other's needs over the out-group. If they didn't do this, this may lead to their group losing control. In other words, when authoritarians are in control, others suffer while they flourish.

[–]quipu 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It's anecdotal, but I definitely know of people who seem to have a more authoritarian personality compared to others. They are the ones who always care about following the rules (whether or not they are sensible), are incredibly annoyed at slight deviations from what they consider "normal" or "acceptable", who feel entitled about having things go their way, and will become incredibly vindictive and aggressive if they do not get what they want. Very similar to the so-called "Karen" meme, but it affects men as well.

I agree that this is true of some groups, but I think the main thrust is to destabilize the country just enough to depose Trump. The goal of a color revolution is to remake a country while keeping it more or less intact, or in other words a "bloodless coup." Many of the people backing this live in US cities, so if the US completely falls apart then their property is at risk, along with the world economy. The higher-ups are wealthy Davos-class elite, and except for a few true psychos, they care more about wealth and power than ideology.
