I think filters are better than blocks because someone who posts the same old tired pseudonazi shit all the time may at one point have an interesting or insightful thing to say that's unrelated to that. Of course I think we can use RES here which would allow that functionality but to have it natively in the site would be great. Bloody 4chan has it, I can filter out all the tranny porn from /gif/ and it works just fine there. Why not use it here to get rid of the nazi shit if you're not interested in it?
I really like free speech, but am sick of race and women hating obsessions of 4chan and voat. by Narrator in Introductions
Just looked and it seems like you can use RES which would allow filtering.

I don't know about blocking that seems dangerous because someone who at one point posts shit and retarded pseudonazi stuff all the time may at some point have something insightful and interesting to say. The option to apply filters should instead be implemented as is possible on 4chan. Just filter the word "jews" or "race" and you'll get more of what you're looking for and less of the same old tired shit everywhere has

I agree with you, for saidit to grow into a proper reddit alternative we need to have more than wacky politics (which is fine and should be allowed) and endless talk about how shit reddit has become.
In order to meliorate this problem we can't just complain to others about how their not doing it we have to be proactive. How about making new subs and posting in them? I have personally made a number of subs and am waiting for users to populate them, occasionally I post to an empty crowd but I can only hope that one day it will be populated.
All of which are neither politics/conspiracy or reddit critique.
Lets make it how we want it to be.

It's become a big hobby of mine, exploring the different modes and forums of communication on the internet.
For many years I just used all the regular shit everyone else irl did but at some point I became interested in the different forums of communication and how they influence the discussion that went on.
I have both lurked and intentionally gone out and researched for "reddit alternatives" or "best chan sites" with varying results. The best finds were through lurking/communicating on a site and seeing something mentioned. I found Lainchan.org (one of my favorites) while on 4chan. I found Saidit while on reddit, I found bluelight.org on reddit also. 8chan when it was still around had some gold buried under all the shit (now 8kun).
When you find out about a new site take some time to get to know it and it's community. These are generally small sites and activity is low but not necessarily low quality. It's easy to get bored or quickly dismiss a site as too slow or low quality because you haven't spent enough time there. You have to remember you aren't looking for one site to be your totalizing internet experience, you want many small valuable sites to make up your experience. If you still crave a easy centralized feed and are too lazy to check each site individually learn how to set up RSS. Saidit for example I don't use every day, it's somewhat slow and it doesn't have all the things I'm looking for in my internet experience but I don't just drop it because of that, I would lose all the valuable things about it. Everything doesn't have to be in one place in fact that's what degrades a site and dips it into authoritarian censorship.
I got into IRC after reading about the early bulletin boards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dddbe9OuJLU&list=PL7nj3G6Jpv2G6Gp6NvN1kUtQuW8QshBWE) in Suelette Dreyfus' "Underground". I had heard about IRC amongst the free software crowd and decided to try to get the experience I read about there. I am now thoroughly addicted to it and have met many friends through it and even made a penpal (we took our conversations to email)
There absolutely is interesting conversation going on out there you just have to sift through all the normies. Nowadays I'm trying to get into XMPP and the chatrooms in there.

So now I have engaged and explained the essay rather than recommended you read it and your ego is to brushed for you to return to your original intent to have a discussion?
"what if the institution itself is unnecessary OR even harmful?"
swarts' argument is that educational institutions were put into place for the express purpose of instilling subservience into the intellectual types in order to make them better workers. The educational institution is intended to increase profits and power of the bourgeoisie (who created the institution) if you'll excuse the Marxist terminology. Because it's aims aren't to educate but rather to instill subservience it will never further the cause of education (it may to some extent but to the detriment of the inherent pragmatism of the will to knowledge i.e. to effect the world and improve it for the thinker, think freedom here) So the question of whether it could be harmful is a direct point against your skepticism and perceived hostility, for if it is the case that it is fundamentally aimed at the wrong thing (not explicitly so, we are told that it is for education and the improvement of our own and our collective well being; a subversion on their part no less) then revolution not reform would necessarily need to be in order. We would need to subvert the subverter to return education to the goal of education and not subservience.
BTW you are the one derailing the discussion because I don't follow your rules for what a good discussion is to a tee. If you find it fruitless because I don't follow your precious Pyramid Practice just don't respond. No need to rage pedantically. You are far from warranted.

Welcome and enjoy! My intro message I'd like all newcomers to see is here: https://saidit.net/s/Introductions/comments/4jdv/hi_new_to_saidit_old_to_censoreddit/gt26 I won't repost it.
Thanks for the rather descriptive summary of how you see the downfall of reddit. The reddit structure has some unique merits so while I use traditional forum sited, chan sites, IRC and personal correspondence (pen pals and the like) to fill out my epistolary conversations with individuals and groups over the internet, I will always have a reddit like site on the list; at this stage this place is the best I've found.
Wouldn't you say that the untutored illiterate who recites the poem was unschooled? I don't see the distinction between unschooling and what you are calling "non-education". Just because the illiterate chose not to learn how to read doesn't mean he didn't educate himself in all sorts of other things he chose to become educated in i.e. the recital of lengthy poetry.
Much of Aaron's conception of unschooling revolved around the personal tutor or mentor, a one on one relationship of learning rather than the traditional one on 30 schoolroom scenario. It's not like anyone can avoid this though the illiterate learnt the poem from somebody.
Yeah but what if the institution itself is unnecessary OR even harmful? (intentionally so according to swartz) You should definitely read the essay. It can be found in the essay compilation book "the boy who could change the world". You can easily get it off b-ok.cc or libgen.

Welcome my friend. It is not so great as I had hoped when I first joined but we cannot use that fact to fuel complacency and return to reddit. It would be a great place if all the people who turned their backs on it just had the courage to be the first to post and not wait for others to make interesting posts. Do not be afraid to post because there is nothing like yours already posted. Be brave enough to bring the good conversation here. People will come out of the woodwork slowly and you will be the spark that started the fire.
I like to do an exercise where whenever I fell like posting something on reddit, I post it here instead or at least post it on both sites.
I would highly recommend the sub C_S_T.
It's sort of a backup of the much more popular reddit one but I like to think that it will be migrated entirely if people only had the courage to post here first rather than to reddit.
Welcome and enjoy!

National Socialist huh? Looks like Poe's law is at work here. Want to elaborate on that?
Without being open source and with the canary lapsed it seems very convincing that it is highly susceptible to becoming or already being a "honeypot for thoughtcrime".
In regard to your third point isn't it the case though that the many being "mindless sheeple" (as cringe as that term is) is just a characteristic of groups, of crowds? The most always follow the few. I guess a good internet discussion forum would encourage the dividing of groups into individuals.
That's interesting about the dynamic of the conversations, being echo chamberish and purely for upvotes. Isn't the saidit interesting/funny votes supposed to mitigate that? The question of what type of forum facillitates the most valuable discussion on the internet is a huge one and when I first joined reddit I was very hopeful about its prospects in regards to that question. After a while though the censorship and shadow banning really got to me and I found this place. Of course I have also gone back to using chan (quality ones) sites and IRC in the meantime.
Are you saying that you have distanced yourself from all forms of reddit-like sites? What do you use otherwhise? do you think ther reddit format can be saved? It seems to me that it has a lot of promise and produces quite a bit of value despite it's issues.
That's a very good point. Do you know of any other reddit alternatives that are also open source like saidit?
