It was self defense. 13yo kid was firing his weapon elsewhere with a 21yo at 2:30am. cops tracked him down. he runs and simultaneously tosses the gun to put his arms up but that was too late. cop saw the motion with the weapon and fired. dont be 13 out at 2:3am shooting and resisting cops with a parent who doesnt give a fuk.

More information came out over time. Other ride operators in the park refused him. This ride allowed him. At this park, each ride is owned and operated separately. They are 'tenants' of the park.

14 year old was overweight and too tall for the ride. The harness barely fit over him. This ride had no safety backup buckle holding the harness to the seat between the legs. So the harness was it.

He knew he was not secured well and told his friend in the ride if he didnt make it, that he loved his family.

The ride operator said the lock light was on indicating he was locked in. And that was probably true or else the ride would be disabled from starting.

Mutiple failures. The ride operator allowing him on. The lack of backup belts or restraints. The lock light not really indicative of a proper restaint. Millions in lawsuit cash and that ride will need a lot of upgrades.

There are calls for it to be torn down.

These are apartments not condos. In Manhattan, many of the buildings are very old turn of the century designs. Manhattan real estate also has a tremendous amount of foreign investment by companies with little interest in maintenance or upgrades, and they just want cash out of the building. The fact that these are expensive apartments means nothing. Fortunately tenants do have rights in NYC and hopefully this building owner is taken to the cleaners. My guess the elevator needed complete replacement which would have been very expensive if it also required building code upgrades.

Edit: Nope - Building was constructed in 1997 making this even weirder. Somebody cheaped out on the elevator or bad installation. Either way, landlord still didn't want to invest after many complaints. Hopefully a prosecution and a lawsuit.
