In a way, non-binary people are perpetuating the gender binary more than anyone trying to actively dismantle it. Non-binary says "Hey, the gender binary is what it is, I'm opting out of it (thereby leaving it intact)." There are those of us that are trying to promote this idea that men and women can still be men and women even if they don't "act" like men and women. But this viewpoint is now considered hateful.

The concept of non-binary totally negates the idea that there can be masculine women and feminine men, because now those people should be called "non-binary." And therefore, society's oppressive roles of man and woman remain utterly unchanged.

The truth is, non-binary is nothing new. "Non-binary" people have existed for millennia. However, the goal for the last 50 years among feminists and LGB theorists was to challenge the gender roles, the idea that men and women must behave in a certain way. Now, we're saying "Masculine is this, feminine is that, we're not going to challenge what those mean. Instead, we're going to call ourselves 'non-binary' people."

Enby is absolute nonsense. Every generation of teens has a subculture. Hippies, punk, goth, emo, scene. Enby is no different. I sympathize because all teens are trying to cultivate a sense of uniqueness, trying to figure out where to align themselves socially. They want to belong to a group but also want to retain a sense of individuality. I blame adults for promulgating the idea that enby is the same as being same-sex attracted or even being trans with persistent, lifelong gender dysphoria.

BOOM! you just assumed her pronouns!

Like, are these people going out to waiters and cashiers and asking their pronouns before they proceed with the interaction? of course not.

the whole pronoun in the bio thing is another example of unsubstantiated woke bullshit, slacktivist nonsense of people doing the bare minimum to feel good about themselves, like they're making any sort of difference in the world.

I refuse to entertain the notion that trans women are biologically female and therefore wholly indistinguishable from a “cis” woman.

I’m not a fan of her, but Amy Coney Barrett was criticized by the HRC for referring to a trans woman as a “physiological male.” For stating a fucking fact! We can’t even say that trans women have male bodies? But then they’ll claim they don’t deny that sex is real. Utter bullshit.

We still need to draw a line somewhere. And besides, this isn't even a conversation on accepting people into the LGBT community - it's a conversation on who we should be open to fucking. So we shouldn't have genital preferences because gay people were rejected? Come on. Horrifying logic.

Ugh. Something liberals are uniquely guilty of - certainly more so than conservatives - is this employment and manipulation of language to covey a certain morality. It's designed to prod those who are uninformed or ambivalent about the topic, or to nudge those who might fall on the right or center-right on a certain position. TERF, marriage equality, gender affirmation to me are such grossly subjective terms that liberals shoehorn in the discourse as the natural and objective, even correct way of describing these things.

The notion that "TERFs" are radical is debatable. The notion that same-sex marriage is a necessary part of equality is debatable. And what well-intentioned human WOULDN'T want to affirm another person? But to force these terms in the discourse as the true nomenclature is a manipulative albeit effective tactic employed by the Left.

I think a lot of it is people, mainly teenagers, who hate themselves and are allured by the idea of a) blaming all their woes on gender dysphoria / transphobia and not these things that are more abstract and intangible like poor socialization, social anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, etc. and b) allured by the idea of reinventing themselves. '

They think they hate themselves because they're trans. But I think they hate themselves for some of those reasons I mentioned. There's no other explanation in my mind for why the most common onset on gender dysphoria has shifted towards adolescence.

On top of this they get what appears to be an affirming, embracing community (i.e. the T community and LGBTQ community more broadly) of people who will approve of them instantly.

What frustrates me more than anything is how coy they act. They claim they're not erasing sex, but dictionaries are literally be revised to skirt the entire concept of sex. At an alarming pace, we're approaching a world where we will not have any language to refer to sex and sexed bodies. The only thing that will matter is "gender."

And what's more, if TRAs have their way, being trans will just be as easy as telling someone you're trans. So abusive men (NOT legitimate trans women but MEN) will be able to finesse their way into women's spaces as easy as blinking an eye. Women's restrooms, women's locker rooms, women's shelters, you name it.

You won't be able to deny that someone is trans. You won't be able to comment that someone doesn't "look" a certain gender. All of this is increasingly verboten. And abusive cis men can and will take advantage.

And I think a lot of true blue LGB people support this because then they can point around and say "look at how many LGBTQ people there are in the world!" of course when you expand the definition of queer to include pretty much anyone and everyone who wants to be included, it's a pretty easy thing to do.

but i think LGB people don't fight back against this ever expanding definition of "queer" because they're too swept up in the ideological battle of us vs. them, liberals vs. conservatives and if they can look around and point to all these millions of examples of "LGBTQ" people, then it bolsters support for the left and leftwing ideology and appears to legitimize the LGBTQ community as a whole. Even though all we're doing is just undermining the parameters around what being LGBT even means to the point where - again - it includes almost anyone who wishes to opt into the identity.

they just want to look and feel super 100% aCcEpTing (and therefore NOT conservative in the slightest!) even to the point of eroding what it means to be LGBT in the first place

It's often not even about "trans women" doing the assaults. It's about letting predatory men into women's spaces - many of whom are cis. Once we get into the territory of gender neutral restrooms/locker rooms, or we get into self ID, then quite literally any man can walk into a women's bathroom and no one will be able to argue that he doesn't belong there. It has nothing to do with transitioning.

37 trans/GNC people murdered. Let's say that 0.5% of the American population is trans/GNC. So that's about 1,640,000 trans/GNC people. 37 of 1,640,000 is 2.26 murders per 100,000. That statistic for the general American population is 5.0 per 100,000. So you're actually less likely to be murdered if you're trans/GNC. And that gap is far too large to be due to any significant "under-reporting" of trans/GNC homicides. That would imply that trans homicides are only correctly identified as such ~30% of the time.

But people will just like and retweet this highly misleading statistic time and time again.

I can jive with their definition of gender. And I can jive with their definition of gay IF you go by the conventional definition of gender as a synonym for sex. But their definition of “gay” and “gender” are wholly incompatible.

Gay people are attracted to the same gender. OK. Fine if you consider gender and sex the same. But going by their own definition of gender, they’re saying gay is attraction to... the way someone thinks about themselves? So if I’m a gay man, and someone - let’s say Charlize Theron - comes out as a trans man tomorrow, without doing anything different with her body or physical appearance, am I supposed to be any more attracted to her?

If we say being gay is attraction to what someone is “supposed to look like,” are we saying that being gay is attraction to culturally-defined norms? Because that’s what you’re saying when you say what someone is “supposed to look like.” So if Charlie Theron gives herself a buzz cut and throws on a flannel shirt, NOW I should be attracted to her?

As soon as we start to believe that being gay is based on culturally-defined norms of gender, then it’s impossible to be born gay. You can’t be innately attracted to something socially constructed. It’s ipso facto a logical inconsistency.

[–]oyasuminasai50 12 insightful - 2 fun12 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I do believe there's such a thing as innate transgender identity. But I think many people who are unhappy with themselves or otherwise suffer from poor socialization are attracted to non-binary and trans ideology because it allows them to distance themselves from themselves and into a new identity of their own making. That's how I would explain the explosion of trans and NB identification in the past 10 years.

Some of it stems from an increase in tolerance towards trans and queer people. But when I look at the rise of trans and NB identification, especially among people who have never experienced gender dysphoria, I think it's more an escape mechanism. It's also why I'll - loosely - associate trans and NB identity today with anime culture. It all provides an escape from the material reality. Fictional Japanese cartoons are about as far removed from Western life as you can get.

And - I think - trans and NB identities allow these people to step into a new persona, one that can distance them from real life where they - perhaps - have a difficult time excelling socially, academically, and / or professionally.

Same with HRC and GLAAD. No one wants to lose their jobs. As much as nonprofits work on solving social problems, they generally don't throw their hands up once the problem has mostly gone away. Even if the consolidated end goal of any nonprofit is - arguably - to put themselves out of existence. So they shift their target to new "problems."

The only way everyone at HRC and GLAAD keeps their jobs is to convince donors that LGBT rights are increasingly under attack, no matter how much progress we've objectively made.

It's a major logical consistency that I've rarely seen challenged much less reconciled. It's an example of the broader logical inconsistency of "gender is made up/oppressive/a social construct and should be eradicated" and also "it's very important for people to alter their bodies to coincide with their gender."

There's also a lot of misinformation about the extent to which bottom surgery emulates "real" genitals. A trans man most certainly cannot get a real erection (i.e. a natural reaction to physical/visual stimuli). As I understand, many phallo surgeries do not include any way to have the "penis" stand erect. If it does, one option is either a flexible metal rod that the trans man can "stand up." And the other is a pump that lives in the "scrotum" that the trans man squeezes.

Also, of course, no way to ejaculate. And, let's be frank, a pleasant part of sex for many people is making their partner orgasm.

I think there's a segment of the population - vocal as they may be - that feel constantly compelled to redefine "bigotry" so they can always feel morally superior.

25 years ago, integrating elements and motifs from different cultures into your art and craft used to be progressive. It showed an appreciation and admiration for beauty and culture outside of your own. Now that's called appropriation. And people - white artists and professionals namely - do not feel comfortable integrating any kind of non-European influence into their art.

I'd wager in another 25 years, we'll call this racist. I mean, Trader Joe's is about to slap a Caucasian name on a bunch of "ethnic" food. How much do you want to bet they'll be accused of whitewashing in a decade or two?

Are teenagers (especially girls) mistaking the awkwardness and discomfort that they feel towards their pubescent bodies for gender dysphoria? by oyasuminasai50 in LGBDropTheT

[–]oyasuminasai50[S] 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think social media more broadly is to blame. Puberty is an awkward time as is, and it's a vulnerable, confusing, and even sometimes scary time, especially for teenage girls. And now we live in a culture where the emphasis on your appearance has been amplified. The ability to make targeted attacks against people has been amplified in the form of social media and cyberbullying. And I think a lot of teenage girls are having a very difficult time navigating through all of that.

Remember when the dialogue not too long ago was how harmful all of those photoshopped models on the magazines were? Now think of how many photoshopped images of people's faces and bodies we see a day compared to then thanks to Instagram and Facebook. It's increased tenfold.

While I do think there is an organic rise in trans identification as a result of rising acceptance, there is no doubt in my mind that social media has sowed extreme confusion, anxiety, and fear into teenagers. And that being trans is seen as a way to cope with a pubescent experience that is three times as uncomfortable and embarrassing as it used to be.

How can you be GNC yet believe that being GNC means you have no gender at all? Isn't that conforming to gender? GNC would mean identifying as male yet not conforming to traditionally male things. Being gender conforming is saying, if I don't like male things, my gender must not be male. Which is conforming to gender. It's just... how do these people think they're actually DOING anything? How do they think they're the most progressive among all of us?

Top post was complaining about cis people. One of the heavily downvoted comments was someone offended that they would make a blanket statement about cis people. Reply to that comment said there's an "implied" some/most/many when they talk about cis people and they don't literally mean ALL cis people.

My thought was, well, when we say women menstruate or men have penises, isn't there any implied some/most/many in that example too? But no, in that case, it's "don't conflate sex and gender!" or "reminder that some women have penises!"

Sadly my comment got removed before I could get what I'm sure would have been a ridiculous reply.
