I have family in LE, so I'm usually skeptical of comments that brand the cops as murderers. Usually, I review the footage and find some way to justify the shooting. In this case, I'm coming up empty.

The officer does good by giving loud, clear explicit orders to the pair. However, it looks like he has a very low threshold for mistakes on the other party. In the video, it's obvious the guy is compliant but very inexperienced when it comes to police interaction and scared shitless. At some point, he puts his hands behind his back as if he were handcuffed perhaps gesturing to the officer that he's no threat, but the officer sees the contrary since hands to the back could also mean he's drawing a weapon from his back waistband. He tells the guy that if he does something like that again he will get shot. He then tells the guy to put his hands straight in the air, then down to the ground, and to begin crawling toward him.

The guy fucks up when his right arm goes slightly behind him mid-crawl. The officer probably interpretted this as him reaching for something and opened fire.

If I had to guess what happened, the officer allowed himself to get sucked into a thing called "scenario fulfillment", where his mind is stuck analyzing all unexpected action as a prelude to the worst case scenario (ie. the guy pulling a gun from behind and firing) rather than as potentially innocuous behavior. Either that, or the officer had a clear mental video of what a perfect surrender looked like and once the guy deviated from that mental video in the slightest, he became a threat.

Whatever the case, he shouldn't be in law enforcement anymore. It's clear to me that he's not capable of making good calls in high stress situations.

My apologies if this isn't as explicit as most of the content here, but it features death nonetheless.

I've been reading up on stampedes and crushes and been learning a lot of interesting things about them.

As it turns out, these tragedies are more a consequence of crowd dynamics rather than people collectively being stupid. Imagine being helplessly stranded at sea during a powerful storm at the mercy of huge waves that are crashing into you. Replace those waves with bodies, and that's basically what a person in a crush is going through.

Crushes occur when a disturbance in one area of a crowd propagates throughout the crowd. The reason this is possible is because the crowd has become so dense that members within it cannot freely move and can only be moved when the crowd itself moves.

Most deaths in a crush are by compressional asphyxiation (aka, getting the air squeezed out of your lungs because everyone is smashed right against you).

Red flags for high crush risk situations are: 1. Indoor venue 2. Crowds where you can feel contacts on four sides of you 3. Few and/or small exits 4. Exits that open only inward

When a crush happens, it is nearly impossible to resolve. If the conditions are right, it doesn't matter if it happens at a night club or a physics conference - everyone involved is pretty screwed regardless of intelligence.

The only smart thing to do would be to assess the risks and avoid being in the wrong time and wrong place to begin with.

Man, what a horrible way to go.

To put things in perspective for people who can swim, instead of water, imagine if you were caught in a landslide and earth was just piling on top of your car - so much so that it has already blocked all your mirrors making escape on your own impossible and has started pouring through a crack in the roof, and you can hear and feel your car being slowly crushed, and there's no sign of it stopping. That poor woman was in that situation.

Some takeaways from this:

Know how to swim
When it's dark, always drive with headlights on. Some newspaper delivery people black out their headlights to be considerate to those still sleeping. Don't do this. Keep the lights on. Otherwise, you put you and others in danger.
If you have to think whether your car can make it across a flooded area, it can't. Turn around and find another way.

The sad thing about this is that, judging from how she's dressed and how doe-eyed she seems, she's probably as innocent as one can be in the cartel business. She's probably the daughter, SO, or clerical (office) worker of a rival, rather than a snitch, thief, hitwoman, or dealer.

You have to either 1) have very tight firearms legislation AND a very small pool of pro-gun people to begin with OR 2) be an island.

The reason behind No. 1 is that going from already strict gun laws to stricter gun laws goes over better than going from no gun laws to stricter gun laws because legal precedence of the government making such restrictions on firearms is already established so debates over whether the government has the right to enact such legislation are closed, and those that do complain can essentially be ignored as their small numbers have little political influence.

The reason behind No. 2 is that if you lack No. 1, you can still argue a feasible scheme to prevent the trafficking of banned firearms into the country. Islands have an easier time controlling routes of entry, so it's much harder to get guns into an island than to get guns over a land border.

Canada is an example of No. 1. UK and Australia are examples of No. 2.

With respect to a total firearms ban, it would be nigh impossible in the US since it has a huge, politically active pro-gun movement already and it is not an island. If for whatever reason, firearms were banned in the US, criminals would still hypothetically be able to obtain them by black market connections.

Also, the fact that there is a constitutional amendment that can be interpreted as guaranteeing the right to bear firearms and at least one major political party that is strongly pro-gun does not make it easier for gun control efforts to pass.

TL;DR There would be too much political and cultural opposition to pass very strict gun control laws in the US, and if they somehow did pass, it'd be hypothetically harder to enforce than in other countries due to geography.
