"Everyone is special in their own way" type shit.

This just sounds like (inherent on saidit) contrarianism - "it's a popular adage, therefore I'm against it".

People with no outstanding qualities do exist, you can't deny that.

Looks like we think of different things when saying "mediocre" - I don't consider it to be the opposite to "with outstanding qualities", in my opinion there's three groups of people: mediocre, with moderately developed qualities, with outstanding qualities. If you combine the first two groups as "mediocre" then the answer to the title is obviously yes, almost everybody is "mediocre" by this definition.

Taking IQ as a convenient example with exactly normal distribution (100,15) for me people with mediocre IQ are in the range 90-110 (which would be roughly 50% of the population (proof)), and outstandingly high IQ is 2-3 sigmas more than 100 (130 or 145 accordingly). What is the mediocre IQ range, by your definition?

Also yes, I exaggerated a bit with "nobody", should have said "insignificant amount of people".

I don't think true mediocrity exists - each skill or experience is situated somewhere on the normal curve, one can be better/worse at some skills and have more/less of some experience, but nobody is situated at the centre of that skill/experience space.

Guatemalan authorities rescued 160 children and adolescents from the fundamentalist Jewish sect Lev Tahor in southeastern Guatemala on Friday following allegations of child abuse, including rape, prosecutors said. by neolib in WorldNews

The Lev Tahor community, founded in 1988 in Israel, practice an austere form of Judaism with interpretations of Jewish law that includes long prayer sessions and arranged marriages.

Lev Tahor ("Pure Heart" in Hebrew) has faced multiple allegations of kidnapping, child marriage and physical abuse since it was founded in the 1980s.

The community settled in Mexico and Guatemala between 2014 and 2017. In 2022, a Mexican police operation in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on the Guatemalan border rescued a group of children and adolescents from a Lev Tahor camp, whose members were arrested on suspicions of participating in abuses against minors.

I vaguely remember that there was also some reporting that he had flight simulator at home with some similar routes, but I could be mistaken.

Experts say Jawlani not only distanced itself from al-Qaida but, having been targeted by Islamic State from early in the civil war, fought hard against its brutal rivals. Over the following years, Jawlani’s fighters sought, with limited success, to win the acquiescence of local communities by providing basic administration and security, rather than simply through fear. In 2021, Jawlani’s efforts to rebrand HTS culminated in an interview with US public broadcasters – though the $10m (£7.9m) reward for information leading to his arrest by US authorities remains.

This strategy led to a fierce debate among analysts. Though the US and Russia, Turkey and other states designate HTS as a terrorist group, some analysts have considered it as breaking with the extreme violence and fanaticism of many previous groups.

They point out that its aims are explicitly local, stripped of any broader vision of a much wider war against the west or Middle Eastern rulers that characterised Islamic State, and that the group has enforced Islamic codes of behaviour less strictly than many expected, recently withdrawing “morality police” from the streets after public protests.

Other experts are convinced that the group’s core thinking remains faithful to the main principles of extremist Islamist ideologies, even if its day-to-day behaviour and tactics are different. They point to thousands of arbitrary detentions in areas under its control and say any idea that HTS is a new and pragmatic form of Islamic militancy is entirely misguided.

However, the argument fell apart in court after the victim was able to produce a cellphone recording of the attack.

NBC story:

A federal judge said Monday he may hold an evidentiary hearing next month to help determine whether to approve the sale of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' media company to satirical publication The Onion.

Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston clarified the sale, which comes after a Nov. 13 auction, remains in limbo until such a hearing, when interested parties can make their case and he can decide which of Jones' assets, if any, can be sold. A date was not immediately set.

He also declined to immediately rule on Jones' request for a temporary restraining order to disqualify the Onion's bid, and said "whatever was status quo pre-auction remains status quo" — essentially allowing Jones to remain broadcasting from his flagship platform, Infowars, for the time being.

Scott Bessent was one of George Soros’ right-hand men when the liberal billionaire bet against the pound on Black Wednesday.

Mr Bessent, then in his early 30s, was part of one of the most famous trades in history and helped net the Soros Fund some $1.5 billion in the space of a month. For Britain, it was a national humiliation that “broke the Bank of England”.

...

He reportedly joined Soros Fund Management in London in the early 1990s as its head of global research, a year before Mr Soros’ short of the pound. He is said to have played a behind-the-scenes role in the bet.

One figure who reported to him described Mr Bessent as “one of the few guys who wasn’t scared” of Mr Soros, describing the pair as a “pretty powerful combination”.

...

Forbes reports that this wound down some six years later, and he rejoined Soros Fund Management in 2011 as chief investment officer.

In that role, he is said to have helped net billions for the firm in betting against the Japanese yen and the pound’s decline following the Brexit vote in 2016.
